wp-image-11805\" src=\"\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/menonitas1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Mennonites1\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1936\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The current <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">archaeological zone of Lamanai<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , whose origins date back to the Pre-Classic period, between the 4th and 1st century BC, was the <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">last Mayan city to be inhabited<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> by the descendants of this civilization. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Around 1618, when the missionaries Bartolom\u00e9 de Fuensalida and Juan de Orbita tried to evangelize the inhabitants of Lamanai, they built two churches, Ramada and the Spanish Church (Spanish Church). <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Soon they were rejected and their temples burned during the acts of resistance to Catholicism that the Mayans of the region began around 1638.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In the vicinity of the ancient metropolis of Lamanai you can also visit the now src=\"\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/IMG_3077-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3077\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The first description of Lamanai<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> by a Westerner <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">was the work of <\/span><\/span><a title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Gann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Thomas Gann<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><a title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Gann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> ,<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> in 1917, but the first excavations began until 1974, under the direction of the Canadian archaeologist from the University of Ontario, David Pendergast. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Since then, archaeological work has concentrated on the <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Temple of the Masks<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> and the <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Temple of the Jaguar
