Big Bay

Shimmering Birch
Two old pals continuing their annual UP North summer fishing trip tradition, experienced a really nice week at Jim’s Lake Independence cabin. The cottage served us well and the varied (day and night) vistas visible from the covered deck were marvelous. An exceptional location offering excellent fishing as well as great sightseeing opportunities nearby. Would definitely consider a return visit! Many thanks Jim, for sharing your family treasure!

Lake Independence trip
We had a great stay at this property. The lake is gorgeous. The house was very comfortable for our family of 4. Our boys really enjoyed fishing on the lake and using the kayak and canoe provided. Jim was very helpful and nice, responded quickly to any communication and even gave me fishing lure tips when I told him my boys were hoping to catch a pike on the lake which they did!

Rebooked it in less than 24 hours
We have been looking for the perfect up north cabin for our family for three years and we ABSOLUTELY found it in this one. The kids loved swimming in the warm shallow sandy waters right behind the cabin and my partner took the canoe out multiple times. We spent a day in Marquette (a super easy drive) at the Childrens Museum (do not miss this if you have kids under 8) but mostly just rotated time between the beach behind the cabin and the Lake Superior shore just down the street. Next year we're bringing bikes. Thank you for a great stay!

Awesome lakefront house!
Awesome place right on the water, epic views! Great secluded area away from the city, couldn't ask for a better getaway! Jim is an A+++ host, everything was taken care of and we had a great time! Perfect spot to start your UP vacation!

Wonderful
What a great place. A beautiful view of the lake and plenty of amenities. We saw so much nature while we were there. We saw deer, bald eagles and a double rainbow after some rainfall.

Lovely summer getaway
Great cottage, nice and clean, lake water was crystal clear and sandy. Weather was a little chilly, so it was too cold for swimming, but my son took the canoe out for a paddle.

Awesome spot on the lake!
Great getaway spot with tons of room, epic views and a very spacious property. Definitely coming back next summer. Close to Marquette and Big Bay is a neat little town. Two Thumbs up!!

Perfect get away
We had a great time taking “cover” at Big Bay. We stayed here half way through a camping road trip and it was perfect timing due to some nasty weather. We loved the place!

Lake stay
This property is located on a gorgeous lake view with a deck to look at the lake. The lake is go for swimming with a sand bottom. A latter to get in and out of the water would be a good improvement. The house was comfortable and I would stay again.

This property is perfect for 6 adults. Second time renting. The lake is perfect.
You won't regret renting. As all cabin rentals, it needs a few things but over all very relaxing and peaceful.

The cabin and location are lovely. Very private and secluded, and you can't beat the views of the lake. The owner was very communicative and helpful finding the location and getting settled. Our only complaint was the housekeeping was lacking. One of the beds seemed as if the sheets had not been changed (sheets felt gritty), the pillow had a blood stain on it and there was garbage under the bed. Other than the housekeeping issue, it was a lovely place.

Great little vacay.
Beach for swimming is beautiful, sandy bottom and can walk out about 150ft until you reach the drop-off. Beautiful views of Lake from porchfront, perfect for relaxing! Overall we had a great stay, but cabin could use a little bit of a deeper clean, sheets had some dirt in them and looks like remnants of mice in the kitchen.

Beautiful spot on Big Bay, needs deep cleaning
We were just here one night in between destinations. This home is right on the water and we enjoyed the view and watching the moon rise. The home is nestled in the woods and needs power washing as well as deep cleaning inside. We had dishes and items noted in listing but very rustic for the most part.

Everything I have posted on the house is accurate. I think you might have been looking for a lot nicer place. I try to communicate with everyone about the house. It is cleaned after every rental. I made an exception to do a one night rental for your family. I don’t think I’ll do that in the future for folks.

Overall, it was a nice property. The cobwebs and spiders were all over the window screens, sunroom, and back porch as stated in previous reviews. There was some issues with housecleaning, but the owner was receptive and was following up with them on that. One recommendation is to move the pull out sleeper into the living room intead of the sun room. It was 90 degrees for over half of the days, and with just a small wall mount air conditioner in the kitchen, the bedrooms did not get below 78, and the sun room, was 90+, and the ceiling fan did not work with out the remote which was missing a 12volt batter- which we did look at Walmart in Marquette, and they did not have any, so that room was unsleepable. We ended up having to buy an airmatress to use. The owner, Jim, was exteremly nice, easy to work with, gave great ideas of places to see/stop, and was receptive when we had an issue/concern. THe lake is nice- very shallow for a while and then drops off. Fishing was great, and the neighbor on the East was very nice and helpful with info as well.

Quick stay
We stayed just overnight and we wish it could have been longer. You cannot beat the view. If we come back to the area we would def stay again!

Beautiful Lake
The cabin had everything we needed, covered porch, nice kitchen, and clear cool water. Easy to get to Marquette Mich. The second toilet was out of service for repairs but it was not a problem for us. Talked with host several times thru the long weekend. We enjoyed ourselves very much.

Beautiful setting!
Jim’s place on Lake Independence in Big Bay had everything we needed for a lovely mini vacation. This is not just a cottage, it is clearly a family house with many amenities and upgrades. The cottage is steps away from the lake, and a short drive to a secluded beach on Lake Superior. The beautiful 3 season room on the back of the house is sunny and bright. A kitchen with all the necessities, a large family room, and comfy beds set the stage for a lovely lake vacation. Would book again in a heartbeat.

Paddle boat was missing so unable to partake and unfortunately it was rainy and cold a couple of days (which is not camp’s fault) so we really didn’t get to use the lake. The view is amazing. Washer and dryer and dishwasher are great. Loved the kitchen. Fully stocked. Very nice bathroom. Beds were hard until on last day I found out the are apparently sleep number beds and were deflated. Enjoyed the stay. Place is great. Would definitely come back.

Great location
Wonderful views. Great location with access to Lake Superior and the area highlights. Little Presque Island and Sugarloaf mountain top 2. Dead River Falls and Yellow Dog Falls both great hikes and views. Cabin is rustic and water pressure in shower could've been better but thoroughly enjoyed the stay regardless. Having laundry is very convenient. Very quiet area, large loud groups probably wouldn't be appreciated. Ask about fire stipulations if you are looking forward to doing that frequently.

Great base camp
Perfect place to get out into the Hurons from the Big Bay side. No issues with the house/property although getting trailers turned around in the yard is a bit of a challenge. Neighbors are a little close, but not much an issue since the weather wasn't cooperative enough for us to much spend time outside. The sun room and covered porch were great and the open kitchen/living room was perfect for our use.

Consider other cabins in the area
After 7 hours driving, it's really disappointing to arrive and see no heat in the kitchen and living room while temperature reached 45F at the middle of night and we had to wake up frequently to keep wood burning chimney alive. The owners attitude at the end was the worst part of the trip. Overall we enjoyed the location but we regret to choose this cabin.

Pest Problem
This property on Lake Independence in Big Bay could be great. The location is fantastic and we really wanted to love it. We have been coming to Big Bay for seven years and this was the first time at this property. There is a significant bug problem in and around the house. Waking up each morning, spiders had re-spun webs across doorways and hallways inside the house; the spiders and moth nests on the exterior were out of control such that you couldn't enjoy the patio because of the moths. A broom to the outside and a quick spray could have alleviated this problem. There is also a significant rodent problem as mouse droppings were found each morning on the stove despite it being clean. The inside of the toaster was also filled with turds. There are live mousetraps in one of the cabinets but these don't seem to be helping. It is too bad this property is neglected so badly, it could be a really beautiful and nice place to stay. We won't be coming back to this property with so many nicer places to stay in Big Bay.

Interesting stay
My family of five spent a week here recently. Upon arrival, we were a little surprised to discover limited supplies....in this time of COVID we expected AMPLE dishsoap, handsoap etc. but all of the handsoap dispensers were so low you couldn't pump anything out of them, we did find some in a cupboard and filled 1 but it was still extremely low. There was no dishwasher detergent at all and minimal dishwashing liquid. Toilet paper was also minimal. The overall cabin is nice, albeit very dated in appearance and amenities, but it looks like it hasn't had a DEEP CLEANING in years. Lots of cobwebs, dust and dead insects. We also had the pleasure of catching 3 mice in the mousetraps provided *in the kitchen cupboard* while we were there. I think that demonstrates a pest problem and an exterminator *might* be indicated! The owner said there should be a cot and an airmattress to use; we didn't find either. We struggled to find sheets for the pull out couch bed and had to take pillows from the other occupied beds in order to have any pillows on the pullout sofa at all . The location is gorgeous, the surrounding area is very nice. We enjoyed the Lake superior beaches just down the road and in Marquette.

It was a great get away in the U.P. A bit chilly for us, but if the weather was warmer it would be a fun place to play around on the lake at. Loved having a washer/dryer. Space worked well for our group. DirectTV was a bonus.
