Pleasant Stay at Chez Pat Cambridge, MA, June 2019
We had a pleasant, peaceful stay at Chez Pat, a lovely Bed & Breakfast in a three-story house. It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood of tree-lined streets in Cambridge, a short walk from Central Square and Inman Square, and not far from MIT and Harvard. Pat Goodheart, the owner, lives on the second floor with Gretel, her beautiful Siamese cat. Guests take rooms on the third floor, sharing a bathroom that looks brand new. The walls are covered with paintings, the rooms are full of antiques. The overall impression is quite warm and charming. Our room was very clean. It had a closet and a window air conditioner. The queen-sized bed, which was made every morning, was comfortable, with clean sheets and pillows. My son and I had the third floor to ourselves most of the time, and it was very quiet. Pat is an intelligent woman who has led a most interesting life. She prepares breakfast for her guests, served in her dining room, and luckily I was able to join her once during my brief stay. Breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs and onions, fruit, granola, breakfast cereal, juice, gouda cheese, French-press coffee, croissants and jams, bagels and cream cheese, and pleasant conversation. The City of Cambridge itself seems very prosperous these days, alive with shops and restaurants. You can take the subway at Central Square to Harvard Square, Kendall Square/MIT or downtown Boston. I rented a car near Central Square. Pat lent me a Cambridge visitor's parking permit.

A little jewel in Central Square/Inman Square
Chez Pat has a unique Bostonian setting. A bit of 19th century charm with French furnishing. It is carefully decorated with antiques capturing the history of time and a touch of items from all parts of world. On my desk was a little chest from China. It is such a thoughtful touch. The hotel walls hang many of Pat and her husband paintings. They captured the countryside of France with vivid colors and refined strokes. Ms. Pat came and greeted me herself and made me my breakfast with homemade strawberry rhubarb jam besides lovely orange marmalade jam and strawberries jams and others. It is unique and with a personality cannot be matched by chain hotels. Furthermore, it is also close to whole food, central square T too!

Chez was a wonderful place to stay for my 1 night in Cambridge- the hosts were incredibly welcoming, the room very clean and spacious, and the breakfast was delicious. Definitely would recommend and stay again next time I'm in town.

Worst host ever
Despite an email correspondence before we arrived telling her about our flight times and expected arrival we were greeted with the words “you took your time”. Just what was needed after a transatlantic flight. She pointed from the stairs and said that’s your room. We weren’t shown where the single bathroom was and had to ask where breakfast would be served. The parking pass which was pre-arranged was not provided after being told “i have it to another guest who arrived earlier”. Thankfully the most fantastic policeman rescued our stay by watching over the car while we had breakfast and a quick walk to Harvard. Breakfast could have been fabulous but was ruined by the spectre of Pat who found it an affront to ask for tea rather than coffee and barked comments at us when we dared to try to be helpful and leave a teaspoon in the jam for another guest. When we left she didn’t say goodbye or acknowledge our departure. The policeman - we’ll we’re now best friends! Why this woman runs a guest house is beyond us. She was rude unwelcoming and totally unsuited to the job. I know Pat will respond to this in the acerbic and dismissive tone she has used to all other negative comments - so go ahead. Give other potential guests a laugh Pat

Your remarks are particular. It is to be regretted that you had such an experience. Little did I know that you were not aware of the address of your accommodation and went to Amory Street in Brookline, rather than Cambridge. Alas. You kindly had called to let me know that you were on the street and I identified the property as having a front porch which went across the building which was built in 1870. You arrived much later than expected as you were not at Amory Street. Did you not hear me say that there were two bathrooms serving the four guest rooms...I am sorry you were unaware of the second bathroom. As for the spoon in the jam, each place setting has two spoons for the use of each guest at table. May you have a better experience at your next accommodation. And let us hope your arrival is not so very much delayed as was the case at Chez Pat in Cambridge. With all good wishes - Pat Goodheart

The property was located well near Kendall Square in a quiet neighborhood and parking was easy with Chez Pat's visitor's pass. My room was sizable, had a tv with easy access to the large bath. Could have had a friend with me. lol Bed comfortable, linens fresh and Mrs. Pat a true pleasure. Breakfast was wonderful! MUST comment that the decor was impressive as if you were residing in an art gallery or museum with wonderful works; made me right at home... WOULD! stay here again CHEERS Paul

Avoid if possible
Pretty shady. There was no check in process, I just knocked and told the lady that I had a reservation and she gave me a key without asking for ID or credit card or anything. Be aware there are a couple flights of VERY steep and narrow stairs. Bedroom itself was alright. Bathroom, however, looked more like it belonged in a frat house. The “complimentary toiletries” were about 20 half empty random bottles plus two different used bars of soap. Based on previous reviews I don’t know how I didn’t get a parking ticket considering the owner never said anything about the permit or offered it. Seems like the owner sees the property more like her home that she’s letting people stay in versus a business that she lives in. There’s a level of professionalism expected that wasn’t present. For a few more dollars, go to one of the chain hotels in the area.

The house and the area are amazingly beautiful and quirky. We stayed in the Queens Room. On the top floor. We shared a bathroom with the other rooms on the top floor so no private bath/shower toilet. Pat the owner was as open and quirky as the house itself. We did have to wait an hour to be checked in, but traffic was bad. We were asked if we wanted breakfast, but didn't know where to go in the morning. There was no sign, no open door. We heard the clanging form somewhere but didnt know where to go. There is Free parking available if you get a pass. We were told to wait another 90 minutes for other guests to leave. We decided to park on the main street (metered parking)instead. The area is very quiet and safe. There is a playground perfect for kids just across from the Property. The central location is another top thing about Chez Pats. It took us only 12 minutes to get to Fenway Park. All and all it was a good place for a night.

Bed is too small for two adults so one of us had to sleep on the floor and no mattress was provided. Also no kitchen and not allowed to bring food to the room so we had to sit outside to eat.

I am afraid that you chose the wrong address for your stay. This is not an accommodation which includes the use of the kitchen. It is a B&B which offers breakfast in the dining room from 8 to 9. With all good wishes - Pat Goodheart

Fair Price for Area. Nice Porch
There was some confusion about the reservations for our group, resulting in 1 member of our group having to sleep in the basement where he complained of mold. My room was nice. Breakfast is good. There was no hand towel in the shared bathroom. I found a used medicine cup on the bedroom floor with bugs in it (stuck to medicine). Pat is a friendly and accommodating host. Never saw a sign with WiFi so not sure if there was any?

Alas, I regret that my worker was so poor in his work as to leave you a cup with bugs in it, stuck to the medicine. I have fired him. The house was beautiful. Great bedding. Clean. My only complaint was sharing of a bathroom in the hallway. I would have preferred more privacy. The stairway up to my room was also very steep and narrow which made it hard to carry my luggage up the stairs.

There is no warning that this is a shared bathroom with 4 other people!!! The room and the sheets were dirty. I waited almost an hour for the owner to show up to give me a key (at 2 pm). Very misleading and overpriced.

If a guest does not let me know when they plan to check in, I can not necessarily be here. iI is my sincere wish to know the arrival time. There are two bathrooms for the 4 bedrooms. The house dates back to the 1870's, a time when attached bathrooms did not exist in a building of this type. What we can offer is a certain charm, good art, and books which are available for the guests.

Great for college visits to Cambridge
We chose Chez Pat because of its very convenient location for college visits to Harvard and MIT and its affordability compared to downtown or suburban hotels. The use of a neighborhood street parking permit was greatly appreciated as parking in Cambridge is challenging without one. My son and I stayed in a basement room that I believe is not typically offered to guests. I didn't question why as it truly didn't matter to us and it was the only room with a bathroom en suite. The bed was comfortable and that was really all that we needed. The bathroom was functional but the shower tile needs to be regrouted and cleaned better.

Bathroom needs a deep clean. Gross. Couldn’t find a hair dryer the first morning and couldn’t find anyone to ask about it. Asked for wireless code again via email and never received a response.

So sorry for your dreadful experience. I was here. You could have spoken to me. The hair dryer is always in the cabinet in the bathroom unless a guest has removed it for their use. This set-up is not for everyone. Had another guest try to enter my room, closed door, without knocking, thinking they could sit in any room. I would leave the door to my room closed and come back and it was open. Parking on street is allowed without permit on Sunday. If staying til Monday, do not wait til Monday morning to get permit. I had a ticket by 7:30 AM.

If you give me your address, I will send you a check for $30., the amount of the ticket. When you are in your room, you can lock it. When you leave, you can not lock it. This is my home. I am sorry for any inconvenience you may have suffered. Further, guests must let me know in advance that they will be coming by car. This is a city. And I have only one guest parking permit, as a guest went off with the second permit, alas. This happens. And it can not be replaced. But there is metered parking on Broadway and Hampshire Streets, the two cross streets, that intersect with Amory Street. With all good wishes - Pat Goodheart

Very nice inside and breakfast was delicious. Rooms had soft sheets and nice paintings. I would only warn that you do share a bathroom. Just be ready for that.

I do not think this is a legal business. There are glaring issues with visitor safety and security (front door to the residence was unlocked upon arrival, with a key left under the front doormat. There is no way to secure any belongings or to even properly lock the bedroom door whether inside or out for the day). Parking is next to impossible to find, and we were welcomed with a parking fine despite following the directions of the owner. When these issues were brought to the attention of the owner/operator, they were very dismissive, said that improvements in these areas would never happen, and that it was my fault I received a parking ticket, because I "did not ask for a parking pass" -- despite there being no mention of a requirement of a parking pass in the accomodation description or in the communications with the owner/operator. At no point was any direct contact made available to guests, aside from if you happened to find the owner on the property, or messaging through Expedia (this is a city law). There are at least 6 rooms rented in this home -- none of the rooms are secured. The front door was not secured. Keys are left under outdoor mats, or on the floor inside the front door within reach from the mail slot. VERY CONCERNING issues. I would not stay here again. The only reason I was not a victim of petty crime is simply luck and my own vigilance. This accommodation does not provide any adequate security to its guests. There are also no fire escapes or clear exits.

I feel I must tell you that this is one of the safest areas in America. That you arrived very late, after check out time, not having informed me that you had a car, is why you got a ticket which I regret. I did give you ten dollars and offered to take you out to dinner as a way of making up for the experience. Perhaps I should have paid the full amount, written you a check, but I have had far more business than usual. This is my home. You have been a guest in my house. I receive paying guests who are mostly charmed by the place. Clearly, you were not one of them, alas. If you would like me to send you a check for twenty dollars if you provide me with your address. Most of my guests are delighted with their stay. They enjoy the breakfast, the art, the conversation. I do feel that you would be happier in a hotel where there are doors that lock. Or, if you choose to stay in a B&B that you arrive no later than nine at night. With all good wishes - Pat Goodheart

Many thanks...While there may be no frills with regard to the shared bath, it is otherwise, a beautifully arranged environment.

Chez Pat est très magnifique!
I stayed at Chez Pat while my son was attending a college weekend at Harvard, and I'm so glad I did. The home was beautiful. The original artwork was amazing. My room was perfect. I enjoyed getting to know the other B&B guests over a delightful breakfast each morning. The location was outstanding. I could walk to Harvard, museums, the Cambridge Public Library, and wonderful restaurants. A bus station was nearby for when I had to take longer excursions. My room was very clean and I enjoyed access to free wi-fi during my stay. I'll be returning to Chez Pat during my future trips to Boston.
