The rental is a mother-in-law suite attached to Hemu and Yash's house.
The suite can be accessed by them and their caretaker. Their is no dead bolt to prevent access from the tenant side. Also, there is no safety deposit box available.
I was not aware of any money missing until my last 6 days. The landlord, Yash and Hemu had left a week or so before then so it was only the caretaker "Dani" and I on their property.
As the last week was now present, I did not want to convert too much American money and also my activities were now minimal where money would be needed. On Thursday February 23, 250 pesos in paper money and 75 pesos in coin. That day I went to the beach and then returned to the my place having spent no money. Dani was to clean my studio and he told landlord that he would not clean unless I was home. So when I did get there, he went inside to clean while I sat outside. After he left and I had finished getting ready to go out. Discovered that 200 pesos in paper were still in purse but not the 50 paper or the 50 in coin.
Because I had just been to the bank a few days prior, I was going to record the serial numbers of the bill the next day. Friday February 24, I put 470 pesos in my wallet and this time I put a small piece of paper with the money showing the amount. This time, I went for my morning walk returning about 9 a.m. During my walk, I met up with a couple of friends who invited me to join them later that morning to Puerto Plata.
After I returned and was preparing to meet those girls, I took out extra money from my "secret" spot" remember no safety box. When I opened my wallet, 270 pesos were only there. I had not been any where except for my morning walk.
I then went to people that I had met and that were actually friends of the landlord. They took me to Jack who is the head of the security for this community of Costambar. His suggestion was either to install dead bolts from my side or better to leave and find a new place for my safety!
I went back threw everything I had in suitcase and bags. The people helped my find a place to stay for my last 5 nights.
I told Yash and Hemu and they did not believe me. What would gain by doing this? The trouble of moving out? They offered no support or financial reimbursement.
I met many very nice people in the Dominican and in Costambar but not here at this property.
