  • Throughout my childhood I spent so much time at this park. I always remember of thinking of it as the park in the middle of the mountains. What I never noticed as a child was how every single aspect of this park was planned out and put there for a reason. Likewise before studying the photographic image I had never thought about how we construct a image and its affordances and constraints. One thing I really want to point out in this image is that while we have this beautiful park there is a huge ugly pipe in the middle of the photograph. It is part of the necessity of the planning of the park, just like the frame is a necessity of an image. We sometimes want to forget it is there but it is a necessary part of an image and still has meaning. #appalachianechoes

  • This is the headstone of Banner Elk, North Carolina. This elk has been in the town forever, but this past year the elk has been refurbished and installed as the centerpiece of the town. This elk frames Appalachia in the sense of this small town pride in the mountains. In the background you can see the historic elementary school and rolling mountains and once again the North Carolina pride of the state flag surrounding this elk even though about 100ft to the right there is another flagpole with the same flags raised high and proud. This is where every child in this town went to school in this picturesque location but as time rolls on is Appalachia move on too? #appalachianechoes

This is a great townhouse right in the town of Banner Elk. Three large bedrooms with very comfortable beds, fully furnished kitchen, two balconies to sit out on and enjoy your morning coffee and a fireplace. It has all the amenities one could ask for. We enjoy sitting in front of the fireplace after a day of skiing. We came for a quick ski trip and this is just a few minutes drive to sugar mountain. The hosts were great with communication and super nice and helpful. We had something come up the day we were to arrive that caused a delay, and they were very accommodating to shift the days to allow us to still stay the same amount of days. They also let us checkout a little later to make sure the roads were safe and free of ice.We will definitely loom to rent this place for our next trip to Banner Elk.

Overall the stay was very nice. The kitchen was great. Dining area was nice. The living room was very nice with a big fireplace and TV. Laundry room was very good. The owners left a very comprehensive guide to the home with all of the instructions for everything very well defined. The balconies had a good view of the mountains but also overlooked the back of a business and there was a good bit of road noise to overcome. The upper floor bedrooms were hard to keep comfortably cool. Probably better in winter.

This home is wonderful! A fast favorite! Close to everything, we were able to walk to restaurants and to LMC campus. The hosts were excellent communicators and gave us detailed information about the home and the area. The home is comfortable and has everything you could need. We had our dog and he loved the balconies. We took him on a long walk around the campus. We will always seek this home when visiting.

The home is beautiful. It was well maintained, clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the detailed book provided by the hosts that explained how everthing works and provided suggestions for local attrations and restaurants. Concert at Beech

We had a girls trip to see a concert at Beech Mountain. Great walkable location to downtown Banner Elk. Easy 20-30 minute drive to lots of other locations. Super quick to Beech. House was very clean and spacious bedrooms. Nice balcony on the back for morning coffee.

Great stay for family

This was a great stay for my family. The property does appear better in person. We were in town for a wedding. The property did have essential items needed such as a steamer for our dresses. The beds were comfortable. We enjoyed the fire place. The property manager was great with communication. Great location (close to restaurants). We would definitely stay again in the future.

Plenty of space, clean and 2 min walk to Lees-McRae campus and downtown Banner Elk. Owners sent helpful info regarding the property and surrounding area ahead of check-in. Plan to stay here again when visiting.

Gem in Banner Elk

This property was perfect for our weekend getaway with our family! The home was cozy, clean, and had some great amenities. In addition, the location was amazing! Everything was walking distance for us in Banner Elk’s charming downtown area. There was even a level 2 EV charger conveniently located around the corner. We plugged in, walked home, and picked up our car at 100% charge the following morning for our departure. Sugar Mountain was a hop skip and a jump away. It really felt like home away from home after an exhausting day of hitting the slopes. Our hosts, Alyson and Eric, were wonderful, too! There was great communication and their guide book to Banner Elk and other pertinent information to our stay was thorough and helpful. We will definitely be back!
