We found what we thought was going to be our yearly rental in Brewster. After seeing the pictures of this house online, we booked immediately and began to follow the profile on Instagram in anticipation of our trip. We have been traveling to the Cape for the last 5 years, rented some good houses and some not so good. We felt a little deceived when we arrived @brewsterhome_bythesea. The exterior of the home has chipping paint and overgrown bushes. When we entered, we realized that the home only had 3 window A/C units, one located bed level in the upstairs bedroom, not ideal. We also realized that parts of the home had not been cleaned from the previous renters. Some of the larger items were, floors had not been swept/vacuumed or mopped, master bedroom bathroom had mold on the shower floor and mold/rust combo on the shower curtain. I ran out to the local hardware store to purchase cleaning supplies so that we would feel comfortable. The other issue is that we found mice poop in the pantry and we could hear rodents running through the master bedroom/bathroom floors and walls.
These issues are not the biggest deal, however, when we considered how much we paid to stay at this home compared to others we have stayed in for less, we became irritated. I realize that these items can happen anywhere but for the money, this home just isn't worth it. We did communicate with the owner about our concerns and were compensated a small amount off of the cleaning fee. Let me remind you that we swept/vacuumed, Swiffered the entire home, purchased a new shower curtain and cleaned the master bathroom. The extremely small amount was a very small percentage of the total cost of this home.
In my opinion, the expectations were not correctly portrayed through Vrbo/social media. We are absolutely good with staying in an older home but it certainly needs to be kept up, especially for the prices they are charging and what they are promising their guests.
