As I read this review it seems directed at the booking platform as much as the innkeepers. While I can not defend the Online Travel Agent (OTA) I need to address the complaints directed at me and at my wife. The Calhoun House is the nicest place to stay in Bryson City. All our suites are very large, immaculately clean (we clean and disinfect between every guest visit), with each suite having a unique decor and it should be noted, there is no complaint in this review about the accommodations. The main House sits alone on 3/4 acre and the only adjacent building is part of the property. It is the Carriage House that was originally built in 1920 and renovated last year into a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, Tree House Suite upstairs with a large art studio below. The “neighbor” she spoke with was actually the guest in the Tree House Suite who has stayed with us a number of times before. Because we are only one block from the downtown shops, restaurants, breweries and the Great Smoky Mountain Train depot, most of our guests will leave their cars parked here and walk to town. Many guests will check out of their suite by 11 AM, put their belongings in their cars, and walk downtown to shop or ride the train. Some cars sit here all day. We encourage it. It was 10:45 and when they started walking toward downtown. She was simply asked if they were leaving their car, could they park it in the lower parking lot. These guests were upset when they arrived and I asked about their dog. We did not have any record of their pet and had not received the normal pet fee. My wife and I love dogs but after we had one person bring 2 aggressive dogs we had to start qualifying the pets before they come, under 30 pounds and at least 2 years old. We have to protect the house and the people who stay here. They got more upset when my wife politely asked them to please not smoke on our porches (right under a sign “Thank you for Not Smoking”). This is a non-smoking property. It is clearly marked in all our literature and in several places around our large covered porches. The porches are the one common area of the house and many guests stay here because we are a non-smoking property. Most guests love our accommodations. I know you will also.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to our guest. This is a building built in 1920, originally advertised as A New Concrete Building, Fireproof with Electric Lights and Free Baths. Fire safety for their guests was an obvious concern as it is today for our guests. While the original concrete structure still exists, all the guest suites have been brought up to modern safety standards. We have replaced all the adjoining walls in the building. They are now over 6" thick with a double layer of 5/8" fireproof sheetrock on both sides and Roxall Safe and Sound fireproof insulation for sound and fire safety on the inside. Every suite has 2 smoke detectors that are interlinked to every other smoke detector in the other guest suites as required by code. Since every suite has a full kitchen, someone clearly set off their smoke detector while cooking something for their breakfast. Other guests have told me, while it is an inconvenience anytime a smoke detector goes off, they are happy to know that we have these safety features in place. I always encourage every guest to come to us with any concerns so that we can immediately resolve the issue, whatever it may be, but once a guest checks into their suite at the Calhoun House, we try to leave them alone to enjoy their stay and the many amenities in their suite. I have spoken with the other guests who were here at the time but unfortunately this guest left early and I did not have any opportunity to speak with him before he left. We strive for every guest to have a perfect stay and, while this was clearly bad timing, it is extremely rare that a guest would be cooking breakfast at 5AM while on vacation, much less set off their smoke alarm while doing it. Again, I am very sorry it happened and we will be working hard to make sure it will not happen again.
