  • Final resting place for Brother Joseph, who created the art that is known as Ave Maria Grotto.This is a cemetery of only monks in residence at St. Bernard Abbey. Ave Maria Grotto, in Cullman, Alabama, is a landscaped, 4-acre park in an old quarry on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey, providing a garden setting for 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous religious structures of the world. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on February 24, 1976, and to the National Register of Historic Places on January 19, 1984. The stone and concrete models are the work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard's Abbey, who devoted some 50 years to the project, the last three decades (1932 to 1961) almost without interruption. They incorporate discarded building supplies, bricks, marbles, tiles, pipes, sea shells, marbles, plastic animals, costume jewellery, toilet bowl floats and cold cream jars. Born in 1878 in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Brother Joseph was maimed in an accident that left him slightly hunched due to cervical kyphosis. He immigrated to the United States as a teenager, settling in northern Alabama. Soon afterward he began studying at the newly founded Benedictine monastery of St. Bernard, where he took his vows in 1897. Br. Joseph was not allowed to be ordained as a priest, due to the rule of the period that stated any man with a distracting disability could not be ordained a priest. He ran the monastery’s power plant and was, even by a monk's standards, a withdrawn, quiet man. Brother Joseph rarely left Alabama, where he died in 1961.

This property is excellent! Being located in a large cove and not directly on the main channel is ideal for swimming and playing at the dock. The two story boat house is so fun for the kids (and adults) to jump off! We used the fire pit every night. The beds were very comfortable, kitchen was well stocked, lots of outdoor hangout space, and it was all very clean and homey. The homeowner was very quick to respond to questions. Can’t wait to go back!

Booked the cabin two days before showing up. We had a family reunion and misjudged the size of our group, so we had to expand. The owner was very good a communication. If I had questions they were answered quickly. The cabin itself was beautiful and very clean. All the little amenities were supplied by the house. Sheets, towels, dishes, etc. My family had a wonderful time and when it came time to leave my kids didn’t want to go. Would definitely recommend to anyone that’s looking to stay at the lake.

Another great trip

We have decided to make this our designated place to stay on the lake! We have tried others, but this one is the best. Beautiful lot on a point with views of the lake on 3 sides. Very nice dock and my grandsons found good fishing from the rocks at waters edge. House was stocked with everything we could need and immaculately kept. 3 times now and it s better every time. Loved the new big tv!

This stay was fabulous. This home is ver comfortable and the location on the water is fantastic. It is so quiet and lovely. The outdoor options for taking in the peacefulness are the best, the fire pit area, the new boat dock with awesome stairs, and the porch with large swing! The house is equipped with everything you need to enjoy cooking for a big group. We were told by others it is the best spot to fish on the lake! It is also a great place to get out and walk or just to just lay back and take a nap! We had a wonderful time!

Beautiful place!!

Awesome, only complaint at all is air conditioning, thermostat kept resetting to eco mode even after several discussions about this, so both nights we came back to a hot house. Something that could easily be fixed. Other than that highly recommended!!! Great home an dock, great for swimming!!

Great time at Lake Smith

House is very nice and very well maintained. It sits beautifully on a quiet part of the lake and has great views from the house. Great fire pit area and the two tier dock is a big hit for kids that want to jump from the top deck. The ability to rent the pontoon boat from the homeowner is a huge bonus! Lake Smith is a beautiful lake but know that it is a good 25-30 min. from a grocery store so come with all of your supplies. The Homeowner was very prompt with responses and everything is well stocked at the house. We wish Lake Smith was closer to Atlanta because it would be a great place to have a second home.

This was a lovely vintage property, well supplied with all renters would expect. It was clean and had the amenities to make our stay effortless. The owner is a 5 star plus renter. Shock alert

The house was beautiful and we enjoyed preparing our meals in the kitchen. The house was perfect for our family. However, when we jumped off the dock to swim our first full day, we were unable to get back up on the dock. The dock was giving off an electrical shock. It was a terrifying experience. We were told to use the rock ledge to swim. However, it was slippery and we were not comfortable doing so. We resorted to taking the boat out when we wanted to swim. Would love to revisit this property if an electrician can correct the shock issue on the dock.

Another great stay at Smith Lake!

My family of 4 visited the 2nd week of June 2022. Communications from the owner were quick and accurate from my initial planning, all the way through check-out. The home is clean, the property well maintained, and kitchen is fully stocked. For us, the best part was the dock! The kids had a blast jumping from the second deck, and we all enjoyed star gazing at night. We also rented the pontoon and tube for a day from the owner...again, no issues, easy interactions. If you are hesitating on this property, don't! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and cant wait for next summer! -The Rogers

Beautiful fall trip

I can summarize in a few words. “If we could own a lake house, it would be this one “! The point location on the lake was a perfect spot-beautiful sunsets. Boys roamed all over, climbing rocks and exploring. Water was cold but they jumped off the great dock anyway Easy walk to lake with gradual steps for those with difficulty with steps. Enjoyed fires at beautiful fireplace inside every night and fire pit too. We’re definitely going to be there again 2022
