Water Edge Boathouse - On the River Dart

  • Escape to a serene riverside haven with this charming one-bedroom Boathouse, nestled in the picturesque village of Dittisham, on the banks of Dittisham Mill Creek some hundred meters off the stunning River Dart. Perfectly designed for couples or solo travellers, this peaceful fully sustainable boutique retreat, offers the ultimate combination of comfort, tranquility, and breathtaking waterside views.

The main house including the boathouse is also available book between June-August.

    No pets please.

    The Space

Step inside this cozy boathouse and feel instantly at home. The open-plan living area is filled with natural light with the large sliding doors, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Curl up on the sofa by the log burner, enjoying the flickering flames as you take in the panoramic views of the water right outside your window. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee or unwinding after a day of exploring, the ever-changing river vista is sure to captivate you.

The compact yet well-equipped kitchen allows you to prepare everything from a simple breakfast to a gourmet dinner. When the weather is fine, step outside to your private balcony and enjoy al fresco dining with the soothing sounds of the river.

Ascend the 'ships steps' up into the snug mezzanine double bed and enjoy a restful nights sleep.

    Outside

The boathouse's private balcony offers an ideal spot to relax, with views that stretch across the river and surrounding countryside. Watch the boats drift by, birds swoop overhead, or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere as you sip a glass of wine at sunset. You also have access to the patio area behind the boathouse along with a rustic BBQ.

Guests, with the owners permission, are also permitted to use the owners swimming pool and potentially the use of the lower garden adjacent to the boathouse. Please note that during the autumn and winter months the pool will unlikely be open. Please ensure, prior to booking, that you request if the pool can be made available for your stay.

For water enthusiasts, Water Edge House provides access to the water via a boat store located underneath the boathouse. Guests can borrow a Canadian canoe (buoyancy aids provided, canoe use is at your own risk).

Bring your own boat which you can launch either down Shute Lane some 20metres west from the beach slipway down by the Ham some 400m away.

You can store your SUP boards in the boat dock below the boathouse

    Services Provided

If you like to stay in and take full advantage of the beautiful views without having to cook, particularly after a long drive or a busy active day out then the owner is able to provide you with a select menu of prepared meals through her company Dart Valley Dining. If you would to take advantage of this then please visit https://dartvalleydining.co.uk/ in advance of your stay as 24hrs notice is required.

Situated immediately below the accommodation is the boat store where you can borrow a Canadian canoe (buoyancy aids are provided and any use of the canoe is at your own risk). Direct access to the water is for around 2 hours either side of high water. There is also a running mooring available should you wish to bring your own boat but you are unable to launch from the property.

The pool and lower garden can only be used with permission from the owners

    Guest Access

Fresh Escapes will provide access details to the property 48 hours before your check-in time

    Interaction

The Boathouse is professionally managed by Fresh Escapes – a Devon-based, privately owned holiday letting and management company with years of experience in marketing, managing and owning holiday homes in and around Devon. We’re proud of our family roots and aim to give our guests the same home-from-home feel.

We know many of you come on holiday to escape the world, so we won’t disturb you too much during your stay. We’ll check in with you after you’ve arrived, and we’ll be on hand if you need anything during your visit, but the house is yours to enjoy. We hope you’ll love it as much as we do.

    Other things to note

The Boathouse is situated at the bottom of the garden of the owners residence. You are able to park one car at the property and have your own access with a pathway leading down to the Boathouse. A torch is suggested during the evening to aid access.

The main garden is for use by the main house in which is lived in most of the time. If the owners are present they will try not to intrude but you may see them coming and going, messing about on the creek or cutting the grass.

The Boathouse has a ship's staircase which is more than a ship's ladder and less than a standard staircase with the access closed off by shutting a hatch once you are in the bedroom area. Alternatively there is a bed settee in the lounge that can be used instead.

There is a 5 Pin tethered EV charger that guests can use for an additional supplement at the time of booking.

    Getting around

No buses serve Dittisham so you will either need a car, bike, catch a ferry or walk to get around the area.

Taxis and e-taxis are also available as well as hiring e-bikes from e-Xplore Devon based in Kingsbridge

    The Neighbourhood

Nestled on the banks of the stunning River Dart, Dittisham is a picturesque village in South Devon that offers a peaceful and idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Often described as one of the most charming and tranquil spots on the river, Dittisham combines natural beauty with a strong sense of community and history.

The village boasts a couple of excellent pubs, including the renowned Ferry Boat Inn which sits right by the river and serves delicious local food, ales, and a welcoming atmosphere.

From the jetty by the FBI you can catch a ferry down to Dartmouth or across to Greenway Quay and Greenway Estate, the home of the late Agatha Christie.

The historic naval town of Dartmouth is a 10 minute drive away where the Britannia Royal Naval College stands proudly overlooking the town. Stroll along the embankment of the River Dart to discover a plethora of boutique shops and galleries, an Elizabethan butterwalk, and countless fantastic restaurants and pubs. On site at the Dart Marina Hotel you have the benefit of the newly opened Zephyr restaurant offering bistro style classics and lite bites or book a 'Gaia' treatment at the Wellbeing Spa.

As well as its scenic estuary, Dartmouth gives access to some superb coastal and country landscapes nearby, sitting as it does on the South West Coast Path. At the mouth of the River Dart you have Dartmouth Castle with the SWCP leading to a number of small bathing coves. On the opposite side is Kingswear and from here you can access the National Trust estate of Coleton Fishacre, an Arts and Crafts-style house with an art deco interior, built in the 1920s for Rupert D'Oyly Carte, son of impresario Richard. The grounds are a gardener's delight, incorporating woodland and sub-tropical species and paths leading out to the cliff edge.

The Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Company operates a wonderfully nostalgic service, which runs from Kingswear to Paignton, taking in some spectacular riverside, coastal and rural scenery.

A sight to behold is the Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer, this historic vessel, built in 1924, is the UK’s only coal-fired paddle steamer in operation. Join a cruise on the river and explore this beautiful stretch of river in style.

A must stay

What an incredible place — absolutely stunning. We spent an early Christmas here surrounded by peace, quiet and quality time together. If you’re looking to truly unwind and switch off, this is perfect. We especially loved the bedroom and the little ladder leading up to it, we’re very adventurous so this was very cool! Here’s a light-hearted, jokey version you can add on If we had to be really picky… a couple of blinds on the lower windows would be amazing. We did have a tiny fear that someone might be standing outside in the dark watching us very horror-movie vibes But honestly, it didn’t take away from how incredible the place was at all!
