Site of Fourstones station, view west 1994. View westawrd, towards Carlisle: ex-NER Newcastle - Carlisle main line. The station was closed 2/1/67.

Fourstones Lime Kilns. These are the remains of a 19th century lime kiln. This large example contains at least four separate lime kilns. Limestone was built in kilns such as this to produce lime, which was used to make cement or improve soil quality. What a shame there is so much rubbish in front of this lime kiln. This is an important piece of industrial heritage and should be respected as much as more high profile ancient monuments.

Staff were exemplary and everything the room was spotless and bed very comfy. one criticism no complimentary water in the fridge and the furniture housing the fridge in need of repair ( doors wouldn’t close after opening). Meal in Fratello’s very good and staff very attentive.

Great hotel and very friendly staff. Delicious salmon for dinner and breakfast was great. The room was very comfortable and big. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, which in my case was good, because that is what we were looking for.

Lovely quite place to stay
This is a lovely quiet place to stay, away from any disturbances. The welcome homemade lemon drizzle cake was very welcome and a nice touch. Beautiful scenery during the day and very dark skies at night for stargazing

There has been a church on the site in Hexham, England, for over 1300 years since Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria made a grant of lands to Wilfrid, Bishop of York. Of Wilfrid's Benedictine abbey, which was constructed almost entirely of material salvaged from nearby Roman ruins.
