What a cozy place!

Keystone "Base Camp"
Although small, the Carol Jean Cabin served as the perfect "Base Camp" for our day trips to Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Mt. Rushmore. Located in a beautiful area outside of Keystone, the cabin offered beautiful morning views, wonderful star-gazing evenings, and restful nights. Far nicer than staying at an in-town motel.

Great stay in Keystone!
Cabin was super comfortable, location was great and bed was comfortable. Nicely stocked for needs. We brought breakfast and lunch supplies with us, slightly larger fridge would have been nice for us, but recognize that not everyone will travel like us.

Peaceful, quiet and lovely accommodations!
Had dinner on the porch each night. Deer kept us company. Watched light traffic, many bikers. As the evening waned it became quieter and quieter.

Vacation
We throughly enjoyed our stay. The Cabin was roomy, quiet, it had a porch swing which we used quite often, a small fridge, pots and pans if you wanted to cook, television, access to a barbecue grill if you so choose to use it. The Cabin is close to Keystone and all the major attractions.

Cozy Cabin
Our family was so happy we found this rental. It is in the perfect location. Close to Custer State Park, and Mt. Rushmore. It's a small little cabin that fit the 4 of us perfectly. Also enjoyed the deer visiting daily. What a treat. The cabin is very clean, has all the amenities. The owners are very nice. I highly recommend staying here.

Awesome Cabin
We have stayed in many VRBO properties and this is one of our favorites. It was clean and well stocked for guests. I loved sitting on the swing and listening to nature. A great location to enjoy the Black Hills and surrounding area. Beautiful decor and well maintained.

Black Hills weekend
We had the best time exploring the Black Hills. This cabin was quiet and secluded, clean and comfortable for two. They were able to accommodate our trailer that we hauled a side by side in on. We will be back!

Fantastic cabin in beautiful setting
We rented this property based on the reviews which were all glowing and we couldn’t have been happier! The cabin is very small as shown in pictures, but so incredibly relaxing, beautifully decorated, clean and has everything you need!

Refined, Rustic and Perfect!
We were looking for a centrally located rental to Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, The Badlands and Deadwood. This cabin fit the bill perfectly. WiFi was good at the cabin but sketchy once you headed out off the property. Beautifully decorated inside with enough space for 4 people. We cooked dinner "at home" twice utilizing the grill and outdoor deck. Richard was a perfect host even with family in town during our stay. I would definitely rent this place again!

Wonderful place!
We had a fantastic stay in the Carol Jean cabin. Everything mentioned in previous reviews is spot-on. The location is perfect for everything there is to do around the Black Hills, and the accommodations are quaint and immaculate. Our family had a fabulous stay and I would recommend it to anyone!

Country Getaway
This was the perfect getaway for my wife and and myself. Richard is the most generous host with a beautiful cabin along blacktop road close to all attractions around Mt Rushmore. Within a short distance you can see the presidents. Will definitely make this the go too for Keystone vacation.

Spent a wonderful three days in the Black Hills and had the pleasure to stay in a cabin at McDonald Family Ranch. Richard was an incredible host and enjoyed visiting with him during our time there. Definitely recommend staying at this beautiful ranch.

Great Cabin in the Black Hills
This place was amazing! My wife and I loved our stay in the Carol Jean cabin. The cabin came well equipped with all the necessities and the location was ideal for exploring the Black Hills. The hosts were very helpful and seemed genuinely happy that we were enjoying our stay. I can’t say enough good things about the place! We would definitely stay here again!!

Great location and adorable cabin!
The cabin was a perfect location for access to everything in the Black Hills! The cabin is beautiful, and in a quaint location within the Black Hills. Our family loved seeing the deer every morning and evening. Our kids enjoyed the swing set to the front of the cabin. Would highly recommend the cabin for a couple or young family to enjoy as much as we did!

Great cabin in the Black Hills
Beautiful cabin. This was clearly put together by someone with an artistic eye and an engineer's brain. Solid. All the amenities you need. And the kingsized bed is the best I've ever had in a VRBO. Really enjoyed getting to know the owner too. Only 14 miles from Mt Rushmore through some of the most beautiful country in the US. I kept expecting to see Hoss and Little Joe emerge from the woods on their horses. But you'd have to be pretty old to remember Bonanza!

The cabin was perfect for first trip to South Dakota! Richard was a welcoming host and provided us with everything we needed. Our daughters loved the loft area! The front porch was picturesque for relaxing in the morning and afternoon. We would definitely rent this cabin again!

***Charming Cabin***
We are so glad to have discovered the Carol Jean Cabin at McDonald Mountain Ranch. This rustic cabin has been beautifully restored inside and out and sits on a lovely piece of property in a great location. This was by far our favorite rental during our 2 week vacation. The hosts thought of everything, and there was nothing that we needed that they hadn't already provided. The kids (10 and 12) felt like pioneers in the loft sleeping space and we all enjoyed the peacefulness of the property with the porch swing. Your host, Richard, has deep ties to the area and it was fun to explore knowing his family connection to Custer State Park and Iron Mountain Road. We only wish we had stayed longer.

A Real Gem..
This place looked charming on line, but is even better in person. This is a historic structure that has been very imaginatively and comfortably refurbished. I marveled at how much creativity went into making it work and look so well. The setting is incredible - in the pine foothills with expansive valley views, away from the Keystone/Mt Rushmore traffic, but convenient to those places as well as Custer SP. Limited internet service and no TV but that was perfectly fine with us. The owner was gracious and knowledgeable about the history and restaurants/activities in the area. I wish we had more of an opportunity to chat with him.

Wonderful Getaway
This is a wonderful and quaint cabin. It is so peaceful and close to nature. We were able to drive many places easily and we could also take hikes right out the cabin door. Modern amenities with a genuine rustic feel!

Awesome cabin close in, yet feels far away
We had a great trip to the Carol Jean cabin. It was very nicely appointed, was clean, quiet and peaceful and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The location is ideal, just a few miles from Keystone and all the local attractions. We saw as many as we could during our short stay, then enjoyed comfortable nights at the cabin. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again!

Stayed with my husband and youngest age 3. Cabin was perfect amount of space for us. Enjoyed the large yard, play area, and beautiful surroundings. As close to Custer state park as could be without staying in the park. Cooked meals mostly and did well between small kitchen and grill to have everything we needed. Rental perfect for small families with kids old enough to navigate stairs easily to the loft sleeping area.

Native Nebraska family who never got to SD before now. Have been planning this trip for months and this property was a perfect fit for our trip! Had so much fun hiking to Lakota Lake. Cabins were very clean, comfortable and had plenty of room for all. Highly recommended!

Picture perfect getaway!
We had a wonderful experience while staying at the Carol Jean cabin. It was picture perfect and exactly what we were hoping to find for our family getaway. We had a relaxing, picturesque vacation with the solitude we needed. Sitting on the porch drinking coffee, watching the wildlife roam around as the sun came up was such a treat for my husband and I! We fell in love with this property and location (especially our kids!) and will absolutely be back to visit again in the future! A huge thank you to the owner and staff for making sure that we had everything that we needed at the cabin, even extras, and for all the little touches that made this a wonderful home-away-from-home for a few days. We highly recommend staying here and will tell our friends and family to stay here if they ever travel to the Black Hills!

Perfect for Family Time
Quiet cabin tucked in between all the best places in the Black Hills. Pulled up in the evening to several deer just behind the cabin in the meadow. Our girls (4yo and 7yo) loved the loft. After long days of adventuring, the girls slept like babies and we enjoyed a swing on the porch. Highly recommend!
