Stunning Oceanfront Island Home! On Secluded Cove Near Lunenburg. Car-Accessible

  • POSSIBLY THE MOST SPECTACULAR RENTAL LOCATION ON THE SOUTH SHORE

    A Unique Experience

Experience Nova Scotia island-living at its finest at the Fennel Old House. Now with high-speed Internet! Please view our house tour video by searching "Fennel Old House" on the web.

Our renovated, turn-of-the-century home is accessible by car with no need for a ferry or boat. We sit on a spectacular, multi-acre, oceanfront site, just 50-feet from the water. Bordered by woods on three sides, we overlook a picturesque, rocky cove and wide bay beyond.

The front deck facing the water is huge and breathtaking… The only house you can see from it is a half-mile across the bay! Guests have called the 180-degree view of the ocean and islands beyond one of the most amazing they’ve ever seen, and that the pictures we provide don’t do the view justice.

The LaHave Islands: a Unique Destination

From the minute you approach Crescent Beach, a popular 1.2-mile long beach which leads from the mainland out to the LaHave Islands, you know you’ve come to a special place. After driving down the wide beach (or taking the road behind it), you follow a winding road and cross two bridges. You encounter postcard views along every turn -- colorful houses, old fishing wharves, and fishing and pleasure boats passing by. At the end of the road, you’ll find the Fennel Old House.

    Conveniently Situated

We’re a 7-minute drive from the mainland and the Lighthouse Route, which runs the mainland between Halifax and Yarmouth. It’s 30-minutes to Bridgewater, which is the area’s main shopping area, and 40 minutes from the historic seaport of Lunenburg and seaside town of Mahone Bay. We’re an hour-and a half southwest of Halifax and the airport (YHZ).

Our property offers charm and privacy, yet is located in a vibrant island community, on the most populated of the two dozen islands which make up the LaHave Islands. We’re also in an area of the South Shore which has much to offer tourists.

    The Outside

Enjoy the outdoors from our sprawling, nicely landscaped yard with flower gardens, 4 sundecks (including a roof deck and deck by the water), floating dock, and screened gazebo perched right on the shore Incidentally, our gazebo and dock were damaged during a recent hurricane and have not been repaired yet.

You can pick wild blueberries and raspberries, and. play croquet and badminton. Or just relax, listening to the seagulls, watching fishing boats in the bay, and viewing deer, fox, seals, otter and blue heron. In the evening, barbecue in the back yard and enjoy spectacular sunsets over the cove.

    The Inside

The Fennel Old House has painted wood floors, period-moldings and wainscoting, painted drywall downstairs and stained tongue-in-groove walls upstairs.

It can comfortably sleep six adults in four bedrooms with brand new, (huge!) skylights that have solar-powered room darkening shades which open with a remote control. The master bedroom has a large, attached changing room, which can also accommodate a crib. The other two upstairs bedrooms have three twin beds between them. A downstairs bedroom has a double bed and adjoins the bathroom. Our guest limit is six people. If you desire to have additional people visit you at any point, you must contact us and see if this is possible.

Our home features a renovated kitchen which looks out over the dining room. It has new hand-made cabinets, beautiful Brazilian soapstone counters, new high-end stainless steel appliances (including a glass-top stove, a French door fridge with ice maker, 3-level dishwasher, farmhouse sink, and dimmable, 3-color temperature lighting under the counters. Also comes with a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker and grinder, food processor, and quality china and flatware and much more. We wish you happy cooking!

Eat your meals at the dining room table while enjoying a wide open view of the cove and bay through a large picture window. The living room has a 36-inch HDTV (no cable or satellite but you can use connected devices such as Apple TV or a Roku box to get programming), a stereo/CD/tape deck, mini pool table, and a large book collection of Nova Scotian culture.

Come home from a day at the beach or touring to warm in front of one of two wood stoves. The first floor also has baseboard electric heating with thermostats in each room, and portable, safe, high-powered heaters on the second floor.

We provide bedding and bath towels, other supplies such as toilet paper, and a washer/dryer. Guests provide their own beach towels. We have replaced our compost toilet with a standard flush toilet so please disregard any issues with the old toilet mentioned in any previous reviews. We have high-speed wireless Internet (25 mbps download & 5 mbps upload), and the cell service is good. We do not allow smoking of any kind inside our home.

    The Area

Locally, there are many attractions. Half a dozen beaches are within a 10-minute drive, including Risser's Beach Provincial Park, with a fine-sand beach with lifeguards, a winding boardwalk along a back marsh, a visitor’s center, a snack bar, and shower facility. On nearby Crescent Beach, people love to park their cars on the beach, walk their dogs, surf, kite-board, stroll the beach at sunrise and sunset, and of course, swim!

On our island are many quaint paths and roads to walk or bike, a marine museum, community hall, government wharf, a church, and a cemetery. Several fishermen and their families still live on the islands, some who will take visitors out fishing or on island tours (ask us). Locals also love to share their community's history through casual encounters along the road and at events like the morning coffee hour (weekly, during the summer). The community hall also hosts guest lectures and other events.

Along the Lighthouse Route on the mainland are lots of craft and antique shops, artist studios, restaurants, museums, and historical sites (such as the Fort Point Museum in LaHave, where the French first landed in Canada in 1604). You can take in musical events, county fairs, farmers’ markets, art shows, ox pulls, movies, theater and more.

For sporting activities, you can rent kayaks and paddle boards, golf at several courses, go horseback riding, rock climb, wind surf, para-sail, and enjoy the resort at White Point Beach, where you can get a day pass to use the pools, yard games, and boats.

Don't miss the most famous bakery in Nova Scotia, the LaHave Bakery (15 minutes away), where you can sit down in its quaint dining area and enjoy an amazing breakfast or lunch.

Another guest favorite is 'The Ovens,' which is a series of ocean caves accessible by wooded walkways, where the waves pound in and out. At Ross Farm, children will love to see a “working” farm where they still raise animals and grow crops. And bake sales and lobster suppers in community halls all over the area are delicious!

    A Quality Rental Experience

We've been renting our two homes for 25 years to people from places as far away as Germany and Hong Kong. We strive to make our guests' stays completely enjoyable. After you reserve, we will mail you driving instructions, information about the house, and things to do in the area. The house will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and if something should occur during your stay, we have a handyman on standby and a variety of service specialists who should be able to fix any problems quickly. We also provide excellent communication by phone and email prior to and during your stay.

    Boating

Our dock is only up in the summer but we have a wooden slip for kayaks, canoes or small boats.

    Gazebo

The screens were recently torn, so the screened part of the gazebo is not currently functioning. But you may use the platform.

    Security cameras

We do not have any indoor security cameras, but we have three outdoors. They monitor the back entryway and backyard (mounted above the door), monitor the front deck (mounted in the corner), and monitor part of the front yard (mounted on the tree at the edge of the woods). If you would like us to disable any of these cameras from recording when they detect motion while you’re there, just ask us.

    Our Rates

Our rental rates are priced similarly to other higher-end Nova Scotia oceanfront homes. The cost and the minimum nights we require vary depending on the time of year and the duration of your stay. For week-long rentals, we rent from Saturday to Saturday but may be able to make an exception based on demand. See more below under "Rates & Availability."

The rent we charge is in US $ and will be converted to CDN $ for Canadian guests. We recently reduced our rates by 20% to help compensate Canadians cope with the high US dollar. Pets are welcome for a non-refundable $100 US fee.

    Availability

If The Fennel Old House is booked during the week you are traveling, note that we also own 'SKYVIEW ON LAHAVE ISLAND,' a 25-year old home perched on the highest point of our island -- above the tree tops -- with an amazing 360-degree vista of the LaHave Islands and the ocean. Gorgeous views from every window! It can sleep up to six. Please see VRBO listing #370757 and HomeAway listing #3320214.

We hope you have the chance to experience our little piece of heaven.

Magical Island Stay

This home is located on a very private island just a short drive from the LaHavre area. Very accessible drive to grocery, craft stores, bakery, and other conveniences. So many beaches and places to hike within short drive. The island is very walkable with many interesting and historical things to discover. The home is decorated with very quaint items that fit the location. The view from the decks attached to the home are just stunning! The view changes every hour with the weather. So fun to watch the wildlife and the fisherman out in their boats. The sky at night is filled with so many stars. Kitchen is well equipped for any real cook and handy to have washer/dryer on site. So quiet and peaceful, we didn't want to leave. Thank you to Mont and family for sharing your family treasure with us!

This was our first night's stay in NS on our travels. If you want the feel of an original Nova Scotia home (dated 1906) with some antique furnishings, this place is for you. I agree with another reviewer that we were a bit nervous to touch anything after reading all of the instructions. We understand that there was an issue with a guest in the past, but we are conscientious adult travelers. I would not rent my home to others if I were concerned. Mont is nice and very communicative. After staying at other places during our travels, he is the only host who asked us to communicate via a phone call at booking and upon entering the home. Something to note: the advertisement says "Car-accessible," but you will not be able to drive down to the house to unload/load your luggage; there is parking at the top of the property and a wheelbarrow to use if necessary. The property is secluded and quiet in a cove with a few security cameras on-site. Happy trails!

A nice spot to stay for mature travellers without children or pets

The house, yard, and location are beautiful. We enjoyed looking at the photo album, showing the progression of the house over the years, and why it is so precious to the Fennel family. We loved being so close to the water; the location was secluded, serene, and perfect for what we were looking for. Far enough from the big town feel, but close enough to town that it's a short drive to supplies. We also loved that we could explore the South Shore and still be close to home base. The interior is beautifully decorated, with furniture you can spot throughout their family history in the album. Our only worry, was that even with well behaved kids and pets, we were a little on edge, making sure the furniture and countertops stayed spotless. We felt intimidated by the big book of instructions, and felt it could have been condensed to eliminate some of the on-edge feeling, however, there were some bits of information included that we appreciated having. Overall, we loved our stay at the Fennel House and would absolutely recommend this spot to mature friends and family, with no kids or pets. A user-friendly kitchen, and a thoughtfully condensed, up to date, house info binder would have made this spot a 5 star stay.

Great views, charming home. overwhelming instructions

Cant beat the location or views. House was a nicely updated older home, photos are accurate as far as the home goes. The property description is not entirely accurate. The dock was damaged last year and is not in place, there is no deck on the rocks and the gazebo is not there. The grounds were in ok shape but half of the lawn was off limits as a new septic system is being installed. The beds were mostly comfortable, there were blinds in some of the windows but not all and fans available and a nice breeze most of the time. The living room furniture needs an update. The loveseat cushion has a huge rip in it and the rattan chairs were not very comfy. The house was clean but there was a good number of spiders and cobwebs in the main living room. Kitchen was nicely appointed with everything we needed but was a bit tight for more than one person to cook in. The grill is charcoal and there is a small portable gas grill available. (BYO propane and charcoal) The toilet is a composting system that required 2 pages of instructions on how to operate, it did require a couple trips to the basement to reset. Overall the house and location would have made for a very serene experience however there was an added level of stress given to us AFTER booking (and paying). You will receive an email from Mont with 11 attachments (50 or so pages) and instructions for everyone in the party to read them all and let him know this was done, as well as print them all and bring them with you. Some of these were helpful (they have been described in other reviews) most were EXTENSIVE and overwhelming. The rules, requests, procedures and policies were exhausting. They left us walking on eggshells as Mont had warnings, disclaimers and rules for EVERYTHING related to the house. In addition to this there were several phone calls to explain things such as how to use the toilet and request to add peat moss to the sewage tank and test a ZOOM call for a future guest. It was too much . We felt like we were under intense scrutiny and were liable to lose the damage deposit for any little issue. The manifesto as I came to call it left a bad taste from day one and did not give us a carefree stay that the location should elicit. In summary, the location and view are great, the house was nice, the description is out dated and the information, procedures, policies and requests were too much.

As Advertised - A Steal for the Price

Property and location dont get much better than this. Overlooking the water with a beautiful patio. Clean home with a modern kitchen. Had some issues and property owner was available immediately to help resolve. Wish the bakery had been open in some capacity during the pandemic. Not a complaint.

Not so roughing it on Bell Island

Wonderful place to stay - mix of gentrified and updated charm. We loved out little house perched on the edge of the shore. We had a variety of visitors including red fox, crows, gulls, deer and an adorable porcupine. House is chilly in late May but the wood stoves do an admirable job of making the rooms cozy. Space heaters in bedrooms help regulate sleeping temperature nicely. Lots to do or see. You can also engage in some down time with reading, contemplation of the tides and enjoyment of the quiet mystery of the wind in the trees.

Wonderful!

Two of my colleagues and I held an offsite at Fennel Old House in May. We hit great weather and the place was amazing. The house was impeccably clean and organized - as were Mont's extremely clear instructions that covered any questions you might have. The views are beautiful from most every window and the place has that great old, seaside homestead feel. My colleagues had to head out to pick up some supplies and they were pleasantly surprised to find a well-stocked store very near by. Mont contacted me to ensure everything was OK upon our arrival and picked up the moment I called him with a question or two. If you're looking for a well-managed, beautiful, quiet place in a unique, seaside location - I highly recommend Fennel Old House.

Beautiful, very private, loved the quiet, peaceful feel of the place

My sisters and I loved the spot, the pages of instructions were a little intimidating, but once you got there the beauty of the home and area made you completely relaxed, the check in time of 4 pm we found a little late but there was some leeway with that if you let Mont know ahead of time, also the checkout of 10 am a little early. Our only complaint with the decor was that there were no cozy chairs or a couch to snuggle in, other than that we loved the quaint, homey feel of the place and the compost toilet was not an issue, which we were leery of, it worked great, Thanks again to Mont for sharing his lovely home.

Great property but some unfortunate drawbacks.

The two major positive aspects of the Fennel Old House are the view and the location. From the back deck – where we thoroughly enjoyed the ritual of our morning coffee – there is an incredible, unobstructed view of a tranquil cove in which the colours change with the tide due to the underwater vegetation. The location is at the end of the road on Bell Island, and, while you can see another home tucked further back in the cove when you walk down to the dock, the setting is exceedingly private and quiet. I enjoyed cycling from the house on Bell Island to Petite Riviere, Green Bay and over the mountain to Penz and La Havre where the local bakery must have a large magnet because my bicycle was always pulled to a stop out front! One evening, we took in a fine concert of folk music at The Old Confidence House at Riverport where a huge but gentle Newfoundland dog meandered through the audience obtaining affection. The La Have Islands Maritime Museum just down the road is a gem. There are two negative aspects, however, to the Fennel Old House. The first is that none of the four bedrooms have adequate curtains. There are no blinds. The concern is not a lack of privacy but rather an absence of protection from the early morning light. It is fine if you are an early riser and wish to be awakened at dawn; however, after 6:00 A.M. each morning, the light can be bright and annoying. The second is that after we booked the Fennel Old House, we were deluged with no less than 30 pages of detailed instructions with respect to the proper care of the house and its equipment from the beginning to the end of our stay. These instructions include: “Important Information about the House” (Over 60 do’s, don’ts and requests), “Care and Use of the Refrigerator” (2 do’s and don’ts), “Care and Use of the Dishwasher” (6 bullet points of do’s and don’ts), “Care, Use & Cleaning of the Electric Stove” (53 bullet points of do’s and don’ts), “Toilet/Composting System Instructions” (8 warnings in bold) and “Use & Care of the Soapstone Counters” (15 bullet points of do’s and don’ts). These meticulous instructions were accompanied by a total of 9 warnings that failure to follow them could result in the loss of all or some of our security deposit. The kitchen renovations this spring – especially the new Brazilian soapstone counters and state-of-the-art electric stove and dishwasher - have possibly made the owner especially apprehensive about potential damage.

Beautiful Cottage on the South Shore

I recently stayed at the Fennel house with my sister and mom for a south shore girls weekend. We loved the seclusion of the home, yet it was relatively central to many South Shore points of interest. The cottage truly has an oceanfront cottage feel, from the decor to the age of the house and antique wood stoves. The house was more spacious than anticipated and the value was well worth it. The old family photo albums showing the upgrades to the house over the years was really neat. The views are spectacular from inside the house and from the many decks /docks located on the exterior. We were there during the recent lunar eclipse and had some of the best views. The cottage is very well stocked with cooking wares and your basic spices and everyday items. Far more stocked than any other vacation property. I was a little nervous about the compost toilet, but none of us had any issues when we were there, and thought it was quite neat. We strolled to Crescent beach and saw many deer along the way. The local inhabitants of the island are very friendly and welcoming. The Lahave Bakery does not disappoint and is a must! The rental process was extremely smooth and Mont called to check in upon our arrival and departure to make sure everything was alright and that we enjoyed our stay. His response time to emails was within an hour or two. I would highly recommend this vacation rental for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and who are looking for a true cottage feel.
