It’s a funky, creative community filled with artists, musicians, and free spirits who’ve chosen to live close to the land and far from the ordinary.

Within minutes of Mana House, you’ll find hidden tide pools, fresh lava formations from the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, secret picnic beaches, and naturally heated geothermal hot ponds.

Geothermal Hot Ponds

At the end of the Red Road lies Pohoiki, where new black sand meets volcanic heat and ocean spray. The geothermal ponds here were shaped by the 2018 eruption, creating one of the island’s most unique places to soak. Best enjoyed at high tide, this spot blends raw power and calm in perfect balance.

Kehena Black Sand Beach

Suit up for Kehena Beach... or don’t. Hidden below the cliffside, Kehena Black Sand Beach awaits, wild, beautiful, and “unofficially” clothing optional. Sundays bring a drum circle and a mix of locals and travelers moving to the same island beat. Just a few minutes down the road with good vibes all around… though you might want to think twice about bringing the grandparents.

Beyond the known spots are hidden coves, lava-edge tide pools, and shoreline trails that few ever find. These are the quiet places — perfect for sunrise coffee, ocean dips, or simply watching the waves. We’ll share our local favorites when you arrive.

Kalani Retreat Center

Just a short walk from Mana House, Kalani is a vibrant wellness and creative retreat center that has long been the cultural heartbeat of the Red Road. Nestled between the jungle and the sea, it’s a place where nature, community, and creativity flow together in true island style.

Grab a coffee, ice cream, or snack at Kalani’s Hale Aloha Snack Shop, and enjoy it on the lanai overlooking the ocean. It’s a perfect spot to watch waves roll in, meet locals, or catch a breeze between classes.

Kalani offers massage and bodywork sessions that connect you with the island’s healing spirit, including traditional lomi lomi, deep tissue, and intuitive energy work.

And of course, Kalani is home to the Sunday Ecstatic Dance, a high-vibe ritual of movement, music, and community that draws hundreds each week. DJs rotate each week, creating a fresh, immersive experience.

Sunday Funday

Sundays on the Red Road have their own heartbeat, as hundreds of locals and travelers from all around make their way down to the coast for Sunday Funday. The morning begins in the jungle with yoga classes unfolding inside greenhouse-style studios where sunlight filters through the trees. From there, the Kalani Ecstatic Dance takes over, barefoot and joyful, hosted by a rotating lineup of DJs who fill the jungle studio with rhythm and heart as everyone moves together in celebration.

As the music fades, follow the sound of drums down the road to Kehena Black Sand Beach for the weekly drum circle. The rhythm echoes off the cliffs as dancers move barefoot on the sand and friends cool off in the waves. The whole beach comes alive with movement and salt air as the community gathers by the sea.

When the sun begins to dip, follow the drum circle to a community picnic overlooking the ocean where everyone joins in. People drum and dance, children laugh and play under the coconut trees , and everyone soaks up the last light of day as the island winds down the weekend together.

Uncle Robert’s & the Hawaiian Kingdom

At the end of the road in Kalapana lies Uncle Robert’s and the Hawaiian Kingdom, a place that blends land, culture, and spirit. It was founded by the late Robert Keliʻihoʻomalu Sr., a Hawaiian-Filipino farmer, soldier, and sovereignty advocate who opened his family’s land to the community with a vision of aloha, cultural renewal, and world peace.

Here, local ʻohana (family) govern through Hawaiian values rather than state bureaucracy, guided by the principle of aloha ʻāina — a love and respect for the land itself. The grounds are alive with music, community, and a feeling of belonging to something deeper.

Today, visitors are invited to step into that story. Stroll through the compound, settle into local rhythms, and explore the lava fields that define Kalapana’s coastline.

Grab a smoothie at the Smoothie Shack, then hike the quarter-mile trail across the 1980s lava flow to reach the ocean. The ground ripples beneath your feet like the surface of another planet, carved by fire and time. Along the trail, you’ll read about broken U.S. treaties and maybe spot a few alien landing sites that remind you this corner of Hawai‘i has its own kind of magic.

Uncle Robert’s (Wednesday Evenings)

Every Wednesday night in Kalapana, visitors and locals come together for an island-style party that feels more like a family reunion than a concert. The covered outdoor gathering is hosted at Uncle Robert’s on Hawaiian Kingdom land. Just down the road, you can step out of America and into a Hawaiian cultural experience where the drinks flow, laughter fills the air, and live island music sets the rhythm. The night begins with traditional Hawaiian songs played by the local uncles of the Kalapana ʻAwa Band, then builds into a mix of reggae, blues, and rock that gets everyone on their feet and dancing. There’s a small cover charge at the door, and local food and drinks are available for purchase, adding even more flavor to the night.

Sundari Gardens – WeDance (Wednesday Nights)

A cozy, conscious dance in Lower Puna where locals and travelers gather to move freely and connect. It’s a barefoot, heart-open kind of night that always ends in smiles and hugs.
