  • The Chestnut House

    The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

    Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

    The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

    A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

    Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Maria is a great hostess sending all the information you need for your stay for a smooth check in and departure. She goes the extra mile for thoughtful touches like the local farm eggs in the fridge and information on the surrounding community! You won’t be disappointed staying here as everything is top-notch - plush linens, lovely decor, stocked kitchen, and peaceful outdoor space!

It is a beautiful place,we have passed it for years going in and out of the George Washington National Forest,we always thought how nice it would be to stay there.We found out that it was a VRBO but we didn't know that it had been completely restored, the inside and outside are both somewhat rustic looking in a way but everything is very modern, the host was great to deal with and we have actually booked the place again for late October, check it out, you'll be glad that you did.

Absolutely beautiful home inside & out - extremely clean & very cozy. Well stocked with everything you might need. Communication with host was clear & easy, they provided sweet notes & treats that really made us feel welcome. Loved enjoying the river frontage. Would definitely stay here again.

We had an absolutely phenomenal experience staying in the Chestnut House on the river. The house was absolutely stunning down to every detail. The property surrounding the home is equally breathtaking. Maria is a fantastic host and we can’t wait to go back and relax!

We had a wonderful and relaxing stay at the Chestnut House over a long weekend. The place was incredibly clean and well provisioned with everything we could need. We had no issues during our stay, but Maria and Randy were helpful and responsive in all communications leading up to our check in. We enjoyed sitting down by the river with our pups and building a fire in the fire pit each night. I think this place is a great value for the all of the high end details of the house like the nice modern updated bathrooms and kitchen. We would definitely stay here again! Also, I recommend picking up some burger patties from Grass n Grit market to grill at the house.

We absolutely loved our peaceful stay at the coziest Riverfront Cottage on The Piney River! We love the Piney River and saw trout jumping all morning long. The cottage is impeccably decorated and immaculate. The surrounding landscape is beautiful and serene. We loved everything about our stay and look forward to visiting again.

My wife and I wanted to get away for a weekend with our dog and we couldn’t have had a better time. The location was everything we were looking for and we look forward to coming back.

Beautiful house and location. You can fish without having to go anywhere. The house was very clean. Lots of indoor and outdoor games to play. Check in/out was very easy. Host was excellent at communication.

Beautiful house right on the river. We had an amazing time just sitting outside listening to the sound of the water rolling by. Inside, the house is impeccable with everything you need to spend some relaxing time away. Our dogs were quite happy as well and were lounging by the river and exploring the property all day long. Maria's place is an immaculate rental with a high attention to detail and well stocked amenities. We have stayed in many other places as well as hosting two properties and still found ourself taking ideas back. The property is remote but still close enough to Crabtree Falls, the best horseback riding in Virginia, and everything else on hwy 151 in Nelson County. The creek setting was awesome and so serene. You can hear it right from the house. It was my wife's birthday and she even included a bottle of wine with a nice birthday note. You wont go wrong renting out this awesome spot!

Gorgeous home in a beautiful setting. We would love to discourage people from this property so that it remains a secret gem but that is too selfish. The home is clean and beautifully decorated by Maria. The property is amazing and so peaceful. Sitting by the river had us hooked. Maria and Randy are excellent hosts. They are attentive and responsive. Hope everyone enjoys this perfect escape.

WOW...The property exterior and interior were amazing!!!. There is not one inch of the property that doesn't say...The owners put incredible thought...effort...and Love into ensuring everything was put together unbelievably well to ensure our stay was the best it could be no matter what our plans were.

This house was absolutely lovely. Everything was well stocked. Kitchen had plenty of pots and pans as well as plates and silverware. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxing and you had river views throughout the house. We will definitely be back!!

What a wonderfully appointed respite. If you’re looking to unwind, be with people you love, and get centered…this is the place. I hesitate to tell you how lovely & welcoming Maria & Randy are because this will become a popular place to be. All the nice little touches, you forgot your toothbrush, no problem, you forgot to bring a book to read, no problem, you forgot a game to play, like I said no problem. It’s all there, just bring yourselves and let the sound of The Piney River soothe your soul. Enjoy!

We loved our stay along the Piney River. We booked this property for Liberty University's graduation weekend. We were concerned about the distance from the school but this house was worth the drive. It is a beautifully remodeled home with plenty of space to stretch out in the living room or sit around the kitchen table. Sitting on the deck right along the river was the perfect way to relax after a busy weekend schedule. The owners thought of all the amenities you might need and provided for a very clean and comfortable stay. The owners also were very understanding and responsive to any questions we had.
