  • The Rio Grande River winds 12 miles down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. When the water is high you can come down the 1,500 foot walled canyon. With less water flowing, guides take you 3 to 4 miles up the canyon with some spots having to portage. But take it all in stride because the views are breathtaking. I recommend Big Bend River Tours. You might get lucky and have the guides that take you a half mile up a side canyon. An excellent day excursion in the out of the way national park.

We hiked further than the 0.7 mile indicated on the signage, and ended up scooting and scrambling up the most interesting narrow and smooth chutes. We heard the song of the elusive canyon wren, too. Quiet and very clean. King bed was comfortable. Simple amenities but quite adequate for our needs. Keurig coffee, microwave, and dorm frig worked well. Very dark in snake country so bring good flashlights. We did not utilize the cantina but saw a lot of people there.

This place was amazing. The views were incredible, and the cantina gave us a nice opportunity to mingle with other guests. We really enjoyed the fire pit, the dark sky and the trail that led up to the caves. The proximity to the park was also great - we would absolutely stay again. Thanks for the wonderful accommodations!

This was the perfect location to explore Big Bend. The room was spacious, clean, and cozy. The outside seating area was a perfect place to look at the stars. Came during the new moon so the stars were incredible! The host provided all needed information for the property. Can’t say enough how much I enjoyed my stay at this property. Third time traveling to the Big Bend area and this was my favorite place I’ve stayed.

The Harness Sop was amazing. Immaculate and very accommodating for off grid lodging! We loved it. The grounds were immaculate also. The private fire pit area outside was very well done. We enjoyed every night by firelight and stargazing. We will be back!

Can you hear that?

The joke around the campfire was, "Can you hear that?" And the answer was always, "No." And my response was, "Right." Cannot believe how quiet it was which is great when looking at all those stars and planets. Can't wait to go back.

Our second visit won't be the last

We absolutely love this place! Spacious solar powered cabin, fantastic views, close to Big Bend, nice meeting new folks in the communal kitchen, and dog friendly. I do have a few issues--both visits there was a lot of dust, fur, and small bits of trash under the beds. This time a wet, stained face towel greeted us in the bathroom. Second is the highly perfumed sheets. It would be great if you could find a perfume-free or neutral detergent. Last, on both visits we could not get the fireplace to light. I even chose a different cabin in hopes of it working. Three other guests said the same thing. It would be great if they worked; or if not best to leave it off the listing rather than get hopes up.

Our backyard view of the mountains was amazing. Cute concept and very clean. They also had many amenities like paper towels, soap, shampoo, and waters which was very helpful.

Wonderful cottage and view

Sat on the back porch and enjoyed the mornings and evenings. Wow. The inside space was equally comfortable and lovely! My husband and I have been discussing spending a week here next time. Joint eating and cooking space worked out much easier and more convenient than I was anticipating. Would do again. Hiking around the premises has really nice features and views to enjoy.

Get away from it all

For anyone looking to decompress and enjoy quiet solitude of desert landscapes and a sky full of stars -- 10 Bits Ranch is your answer. We enjoyed ever minute of our stay. The cabins were cozy (the gas fireplaces kept the room perfectly warm...never had to use the heater). Sitting on our private back porch at night with a fire was wonderful. Getting to Big Bend was an easy half-hour drive. And took our e-bikes out for rides every day from the cabin out into the desert. Already planning our return trip!

Amazing stay

Really cool place to stay - close enough to Big Bend but really no rush getting there because it was nice to spend time on the property. Temps got around 110 but the rooms stayed plenty cool. Nice hike on the property and awesome to be able to cook dinners over the fire. Definitely looking to book another trip back!

Cute Concept

My partner and I stayed here one night. It was a last-minute find after a rare snow event delayed our backpacking plans. It's a cute concept with all of the buildings creating an "old west town" that is tucked away in the Chihuahuan Desert. Harness Shop had a cozy interior, comfy bed, and a beautiful view from the back porch. We did encounter some sort of plumbing issue. We noticed a faint sewage smell, and then realized the shower drain was backing up (which meant I couldn't shower). I emailed the property managers to let them know, and someone showed up to take a look at it the next day. We were on our way out, but I think this still shows how responsive they are to issues. One last thing: The Vrbo check-in and check-out times were different from the email I received from Ten Bits Ranch. When I made my reservation through Vrbo, the listing stated that check-in was after 2 and check-out was before 12. The ACTUAL check-in time is after 4 with the check-out being 11. Not a big deal, but hopefully the listing is accurate now.
