“This hotel is crying out for a good interior designer. With such a handsome exterior and storied history it’s such a shame the interior is a disjointed mishmash of (mostly tacky) styles. The room decor can best be described as 50 shades of blah, reminiscent of a prison cell, leaving this guest wondering what my crime was. And other than a few photos of the glory days of yesteryear in the lobby, there is a distinct lack of artwork on the walls. The staff work hard to accommodate requests, yet...

“I had a wonderful stay at Pen-y-bryn Lodge. The property is a beautiful historic building with a peaceful atmosphere, and the room was spacious, spotless, and full of character. The hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming, making the stay feel warm and personal. Overall, a fantastic experience — I would highly recommend this lodge to anyone visiting Oamaru.”

“Unit was clean, tidy, a little dated but in good condition. Conveniently located, helpful staff. The clincher for us is the dog-friendly classification allowing us to take with us our beloved black Labrador. The one thing that would lift the unit to 5 stars would be a heat pump/air conditioning. We shall certainly book again. ”

“Convenient location and comfortable and well appointed room - perfect for our one night stay in Oamaru. Easy parking and ground floor room made access very easy. Would not hesitate to recommend to other travellers. We didn’t use the on site restaurant or bar facilities so can’t comment on that.”

“Owner really rude and aggressive, knocking on the door at 10.00 asking us to leave. Not 10.10 or 10.01. It seem he was waiting at the door looking at his watch. After I said ok, and even when he could see that my baby was half dressed, he knocked again 30 seconds later. In two months in New Zealand staying at different places I have never experienced such horrible behavior. ”
