Great Stay
The property was really nice and as advertised. Location was perfect for being close to the national park entrance. Definitely recommend taking some time to explore the property’s impressive garden.

Paradise only gets better
This was our second trip to this property and time & the owner's pride in it has only made it better. We never tire of visiting Kilauea when we visit the Big Island and Jim's lodging is only about a mile from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. Its when you end the day however, that his place is special. It is literally in a living garden of tropical plants. To look out the window and see anthuriums, if only those as there are far more types of flowers, is wondrous. A walk through his gardens will confirm that his hideaway is truly a Hawaiian paradise.

Family Visit
Jim’s place is great for us when visiting family in the area. This is our 2nd time staying and we enjoyed it as much as our first. It’s a few minutes from Volcano National Park, and lovely cafes.

Absolutely beautiful garden paths to stroll on at the property. Relaxing. The host, Jim, was very helpful & cordial. He provided excellent directions to guide us to his VRBO. He also gave us suggestions of places to visit in the area.

Great stay!
Perfect spot to relax after an extended day exploring the volcano park. The grounds are truly beautiful to walk. The space itself is well-kept with a great kitchenette to prepare the basics. Lovely touches like coffee/tea available to make the stay even more special.

An excellent spot to explore Volcano National Park
We had a great stay at this spacious, charming home. Check in was super-simple and we had a chance to explore both the stunning gardens on-site and pop over to the National Park on the evening we arrived. The kitchenette was perfect for warming up dinner and having coffee in the morning. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed sleeping to the sound of rain outside. Highly recommended!

Terrific & Interesting Two Days
The area of Volcanos National Park is fascinating and being so close to the action is valuable. Volcano Village is small and quirky which suits our style of travel. Jim’s home is comfortable, inviting, and includes even more than just the necessities. The electric bed warmer was delicious and the small space heater necessary for the cool, damp weather we had. A dehumidifier would be a welcome addition. The gardens are spectacular and their history very interesting. Check out both if you stay and try to chat with Jim if you can as we were lucky enough to do.

Thank you for your kind words. We are looking into an energy saving humidifier as they reallly pull electricity and our old one drove the electric costs high. Otherwise , we are glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated your comments and suggestion. Thanks again.

Rainforest retreat close to Volcano Park
A little off the beaten path via a one lane road but the rainforest garden was beautiful. The bed was king-size with an electric heating under the sheets. Didn't use it since the space heater was enough to heat up the room before shutting it off while sleeping. It was close to Volcano park and we checked out early to get to the park by 7am for hiking. We skipped the shower which was pretty barebones which we probably didn't have time for anyway.

Quick volcano stay
Its was nice the room is connected to the bottom part of jims house almost like a garage converted to a room. You can lock the door both ways so we felt comfortable the whole time. Mini heater is a life saver. Super convenient location for volcanoe and its a better option than the many hostels around. Beautiful rain forest garden on the property.

Aloha and thank you for your response. Just to be clear, my family built the house a number of years ago and the unit was never a garage. It might appear that way, but it is not. The configuration for the door into the main house was due to having a separate place for us youngsters at the time. Also, we were disappointed with the condition you left the unit. It was rather dirty along with very dirty towels that were bundled up so as not to see the dirt until they were pulled apart for laundry purposes.

The space was exactly as described and pictured in listing. Jim’s direction made it easy to find (although I do recommend checking in during daylight as it is really dark- great for seeing stars!). Welcome snacks and water we’re appreciated! Super convenient to Volcanoes NP.

Very beautiful garden setting near Volcano National Park
Jim greeted us on arrival and told us about his family's multigenerational history in Hawaii and his mother's contributions to the community. He has continued her legacy by maintaining the beautiful gardens and pathways on the property. The apartment was well supplied and comfortable, with Hawaiian snacks and coffee provided. Would return again.

A Quaint Stay.
Pros - - Jim is a welcoming and responsive host. - If you are looking to leave city life behind for a more casual and remote stay -- this is the place for you. - The property has a lovely private garden with a small pond to enjoy. - Very close to Volcano National Park. - Attending the Sunday Farmer's market in Volcano was a nice start to the day. Cons - - The request for quiet hours and to conserve water (limit shower time and refrain from washing clothes etc.) made us feel constricted, as we didn't want to impose on our host. - If you are looking for a crisp 'hotel style stay' the bed quality and room are more casual. - I liked this location as a starting point for our vacation, but we equally could have stayed in Hilo, as we found one day trip was adequate time to explore Volcano National Park and the hamlet of Volcano.

However, you forgot to mention that the reason we ask for a time limit on the showers etc, is because we are on catchment up here in the mountains. We had guests taking 45 minute showers min the past. We can't run out of water. Again, thank you fro staying with us and for your valuable feedback. Aloha.

Unique & lovely
Spacious, beautifully appointed room attached to the host’s home, surrounded by rainforest in a small village, 1 mile from Volcano National Park. The extensive walk-through garden, complete with a tea house, was a fascinating surprise. Very accommodating host. Perfect for the two of us! Loved our stay!

Cool location! Great host! Good night’s sleep!
Loved staying here so close to Volcano Nat Park as it allowed us to get there early. Location of the house was very cool. Bed was comfy and the heated mattress pad was a HUGE plus. Host was great and cordial and had some water and snacks for us and also helped us retrieve a forgotten item easily. Definitely recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and talking with our host, Jim. Loved the history of the place, and a walk through the acreage is not to be missed. We took our drinks and books down to the Tea House and relaxed as the sun set and the sounds of the birds echoed through the trees. No issues finding the place, just followed Jim's directions. Appreciate the loan of a little waffle maker for our breakfast. Thank you for sharing Kimalia with us!

Volcano retreat
This property was perfect for us. It is close to Volcanoes National Park, and the gardens are beautiful. Jim was a gracious and welcoming host. He suggested that we go to the local farmer's maket, and it was great. He also had a binder with local restaurant suggestions. We would definitely return!

I already reviewed my stay but then stayed an extra day. What I didn’t mention in my previous review was the wonderful garden specializing in tropical rhododendrons. Question I had when looking at all the reviews was why they all say “liked cleanliness” as if that were all!! It is much more than clean!

Location location location
For me this was perfect: a studio with kitchenette for breakfast and a warm shower and bed for the cool Volcano Village morning and evening. I did not have a car but love to walk and this accommodation is half way between my Volcano family and the Village - about a 15 minute walk.

Beautiful Property and Great Value!
We loved our short stay at Jim's Private Getaway. The room is large and comfortable, and the kitchenette was well stocked with everything we needed. The home is on a two acre lot with a paths through the garden filled with vireya rhododendrons. I just wish we had more time to explore. Jim was a great host; he greeted us when we arrived and then left us to ourselves. The pricing was great and much more reasonable than neighboring accommodations. We had no problems finding the property using Jim's directions.

Charming studio just outside volcano NP
posizione fantastica per visitare volcano national park e non solo. Piccolo appartamento silenzioso fornito di tutto il necessario. Sembra di essere persi nella giungla, c'è un giardino bellissimo ma si trova a pochi minuti dal centro di volcano e dal parco nazionale. Jim é gentile disponibile e risponde in tempi brevi e vive nella stessa casa. Viaggiando da sola un bel plus. Ottimo soggiorno. Sarebbe bello tornare!

Great stay near national park
This was an extremely convenient location for a trip to Volcanoes National Park. The owner was communicative & friendly. The bed and furnishings were comfortable, and we appreciated the coffee provided in the morning since there is not much near the park itself. Would recommend you book this for your trip to Volcanoes!

Wonderful garden hideaway in the jungle!
This was the perfect location for our visit to VNP! The beautiful gardens on the property was an extra lovely surprise. The host was gracious and provided everything we needed. We enjoyed the sound of the rain on the jungle around us on our first night. We will be back.

Nice Location in the rainforest

They were a nice enough couple , but she was worried before she even got here. I had to give her my phone number. I think they figured they would get lost and they did. We recommend that guests not use a GPS here as 99% of the time they get lost then blame it on us and give us less than great review . If they would follow the directs I give them there would be no problem 99% of the people who follow our directions find the place easily. We are growing wearing of being blamed and dinged my guests who don’t want to follow directs. Ugh.

Good value for the area
The unit is a little rustic, but conveniently located to the National Park. It would be difficult to find after dark, so make sure you plan to get there before then. The host communicated well and was quick to respond when I had a question. The neighborhood was very quiet and the grounds were very tropical with beautiful plants and flowers. Overall, a good value, just don’t expect a posh resort.

The pictures on the listing are are exactly what you see upon arrival. Why did you stay if you didn't like what you saw. Not sure what they mean by rustic. I don't advertise a posh resort. LOL. You should have gone to Kona if you wanted a resort. LOL. Rather foolish of you.

Pros: quiet, secluded location, comfortable bed, usage of carport Cons: low shower head, few electrical outlets accessible near bed Other: foam vinyl toilet seat (some may like this, others don't); long, single lane road to access site (we only met one oncoming vehicle over the course of our 3-day stay)

Nice little studio in Volcano
I stayed here 2 nights to run the Volcano half marathon. It’s close to the Volcano Village & the National Park. Studio room was just the right size for 1 person or a coupe. Gardens are very nice to explore as well.
