Originally believed to have been designed for the gamekeeper by renowned Yorkshire architect John Carr, Hinds House occupies one of the estate’s striking turret structures. Inside, this 3-bedroom cottage has been sympathetically renovated, showcasing antiques from Castle Howard alongside replicas of original wallpapers from the estate archives. Traditional features such as the kitchen’s Aga and the living room’s wood burning stove bring warmth and atmosphere, whilst modern amenities have also been considered. One of the home’s most distinctive highlights is the master bedroom’s turret bathroom, where a freestanding copper bath creates a truly special space to unwind after a day of exploration. 
The enclosed garden provides a wonderful place to relax and enjoy barbecues on the patio, with glorious vistas towards Castle Howard’s iconic Mausoleum and Pyramid. You can stroll to Castle Howard itself - guests enjoy one complimentary day pass to the house and grounds during your stay.

Step into history with a stay at Hinds House, a charming listed cottage set within one of the turrets of Castle Howard’s historic fortified walls, part of the estate’s original deer park. 
Just a leisurely 20-minute stroll (or short drive) from Castle Howard itself, guests can enjoy complimentary one-day access to the magnificent house and grounds (subject to opening dates and availability). A visit during the Christmas opening period is especially magical. The Castle Howard Farm Shop is perfect for picking up produce from the estate and local area (fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, bread as well as other groceries and gifts). 
In terms of local amenities, Welburn village (2.5km) is home to a popular pub restaurant, alongside a village bakery, whilst some of North Yorkshire’s most picturesque market towns are within a short drive. Malton (10.5km), renowned as Yorkshire’s food capital, offers excellent independent shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as the fascinating Eden Camp Modern History Museum. The charming towns of Helmsley (21km) and Pickering (22km) are equally appealing, with attractive streets lined with traditional pubs, shops and local eateries. History enthusiasts will also appreciate the property’s proximity to several grand country houses, including Nunnington Hall, Beningbrough Hall, Duncombe Park and Sledmere House, all within half an hour by car. 
For outdoor adventures, the breathtaking North York Moors provide endless opportunities for walking and discovering Yorkshire’s spectacular scenery. Dalby Forest, around 40 minutes away, is a fantastic destination for all ages, offering scenic trails, panoramic viewpoints, Segway tours and the exhilarating Go Ape treetop experience. From Pickering, the heritage steam railway winds through the heart of the moors to Whitby (59km), providing one of the most scenic journeys in the region.
Beyond the countryside, York (23km) makes an excellent day trip, with its medieval streets, iconic Minster, National Railway museum and superb shopping. The Yorkshire coast is also within easy reach, with Scarborough, Filey and Whitby all accessible within an hour. In Whitby, visitors can explore the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey and soak up the atmosphere of this historic seaside town, famous for its maritime heritage and stunning coastal views.
