Our experience with this property was extremely stressful and disappointing.We booked this home because we needed a comfortable place close to the hospital while dealing with a serious family medical emergency (a stroke). Shortly after arriving, two neighbors approached us and made alarming statements about the property, including claims that it had previously been used as a gang hideout and that a killing had occurred there. Hearing this,while we were already under significant emotional stress made us feel unsafe and unable to remain at the property.Because of this situation, we made the difficult decision to vacate the home shortly after arrival. We immediately contacted the host through the VRBO app to explain the situation.In the messages that followed, the host stated that the neighbors had lied but also acknowledged that there has been ongoing conflict with them because they do not want short-term rental guests in the property. This type of neighbor hostility and guest confrontation was never disclosed in the listing.Despite the circumstances and the fact that we left almost immediately due to safety concerns, the host refused to provide any refund — even a partial one — stating that their policy requires a cancellation notice of 7–10 days prior to check-in.Regardless of who is right about the neighbors’ claims, being confronted by neighbors with alarming statements and learning there is an ongoing dispute about the rental made the environment uncomfortable.
