The pros and cons
We would never go there again. Pros ..The host was great communicating , easy checking in. Enjoyed the hot tub. Nice view.WiFi worked. They allow dogs. Bathrooms obviously undated nicely. Beds comfortable enough. CONS …short white dog hair on couch, stain on sheet , 7 ft ceilings, felt small and claustrophobic ,seems very old , hood above stove filthy, had very pungent deodorizes plugged in several rooms which knocked us over when we walked in, very dark, one burner would not work consistently on stove, and fire pit pic on website looks close , but you actually have to hike up steeply through the woods in the dark , abandoned shack and trailer next door, old mismatched furniture, not full set of spoons, 2 plastic wine glasses, which maybe is for hot tub but no good stemware , not full set of teaspoons.

Larry, I don't even know where to begin with your negative review. In personal correspondence to me, you accused me of deleting any review that we got that was less than 5 stars. VRBO will not let you delete any reviews, and even if I could, I wouldn't. Guests need to know what other people think of our property. I hope you see that your review was posted as well, because you accused me of not posting your review or having VRBO refuse to post it. I have never had such a poor review, in fact, I have never had a review that was less than 4 stars. Any property is going to have its pros and cons, but listing "not full set of spoons" and "not full set of teaspoons" is a little petty in my opinion. You also listed that one of the burners on the stove was not functioning properly, but you didn't even extend me the courtesy of telling me which one so that I could have it fixed. I do my best to keep the property clean, enjoyable, and relaxing and I will continue to do so well into the future. I hope that you find a more compatible property for your next vacation or time away. I also hope that if you do have issues with other peoples' property, that you tell them what the issues are and see if they can be fixed or managed prior to putting up such a negative review. Weekend R&R
Booked this place for the weekend and it was everything and more. We wanted to go somewhere to relax, unwind, sit by a fire and hop in the hot tub. It was amazing plus it had a view. We loved it.

Mountain perfection!!
We had such a wonderful weekend! The view is amazing, the cabin story book perfect, red hot showers and cozy flannel sheets. We spent many an hour hot tubbing and reading in front of the fireplace. We initially struggled to light the fire but Brian gets 10/10 for responsiveness, even proactively calling the cabin land line to make sure we were sorted- bravo!! I hope we can return

Snow in the highlands, had an exciting time!
The cabin is great and the view is spectacular. We had a great time during our stay, though we did run into some unexpected complications due to weather. Around 4 inches of snow dropped roughly 36 hours before we were scheduled to leave. Brian had snow shovels, mostly for the deck and walkway I'm sure. The driveway has a fairly elevated grade, and the path we dug couldn't get the car out. Brian was great about helping us connect with a neighbor who plowed the driveway for us and afterward we were able to get back to town. Short version: Great place to stay. Cabin is comfortable, warm, and has a great view. Think ahead if snow's in the forecast. If its 3+ inches, even a 4-wheel drive may not do the trick without help.

Cabin on the Mountain
What a terrific mountain getaway! Our cabin was so warm and inviting and we were thrilled to find it decorated for Xmas! We felt right at home and except for food and personal items we found everything we needed for our stay. The views of the mountains and the river from the porch were fantastic! Would definitely love to stay here again!

Truly a gem
This property is so much more beautiful than the pictures show. It’s spotless clean, quite, feels secluded, but it’s only a short drive to W Jefferson. The view from the deck and the hot tub are absolutely stunning. Six stars as far as I am concerned.

Relaxation with a spectacular view!
We had such a great stay at this cabin. The views from the porch are gorgeous and we spent lots of time out there enjoying the hot tub and patio. The cabin is cozy and compact but well laid out and comfortable. We cooked several meals in the well equipped kitchen (heads up, no dishwasher). The location is great - feels so quiet and private, but only about 15 minutes to West Jefferson. Lots of nearby hikes and we loved exploring the river which was easy to access from the property. We would love to return!!

Amazing views of Sunsets over the mountains
The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. The wifi worked great. It seemed like it was far away from civilization, but it was only a short trip to a grocery store and to Downtown Jefferson's shops and restaurants. The mountain view from the porch cabin was worth every penny! Highly recommend!

Favorite Mountain Cabin By Far!
We had an amazing stay at this property! Owner was extremely responsive and accommodating. The cabin itself was clean, well-equipped with everything you could possibly need for your stay and then some, and with breathtaking views to boot. We especially loved all the toys, my 1 year old loved the building blocks! We’ve stayed at several cabin rentals over the years and this one just takes the cake. We’ll definitely be rebooking.

Awesome views! Property owner responses excellent and timely.
If younger, we could appreciate more. The driveway is steep and not easy to turn around in. But that could be us! We were in a big truck. It may not have required more than front wheel drive if backend had more weight to it. I cannot emphasize enough how awesome the panoramic views are!

Perfect Getaway

Annual retreat
Brian was the best host I've ever had as far as communicating. The hot tub was crucial as we were hiking hard every day, but the views were stunning. We rented this property for both and were not disappointed. We hope to make it back next year!

Peaceful Hideaway
The cabin sits on top of a cliff overlooking a river and mountains. It is very private and has everything you would need including a washer/ dryer, grill and television. It was perfectly located for fishing, mountain biking and shopping in nearby West Jefferson. I would highly recommend this cabin.

NC Mountains
Beautiful cabin. Hiked some nearby trails, went tubing down the river, and explored West Jefferson. The owner has a guest book in the cabin for all guests to sign and write about their trip. Our trip was based largely on what other guests wrote in the book! Awesome idea. I wish more places did this! Lots of fun and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful mountains. The driveway is a bit steep, but my 2 wheel drive, 4cyl Tacoma pulled it off. We drove past the cabin on arrival. The GPS will bring you to the general area, but once you get to the GPS location, it’s on the left hand side down the slope. You’ll see a red reflector in the ground to the right. You definitely feel like you have your own private oasis in the mountains at this cabin. You can’t see any neighbors. We took a walk to the river to scope it out; you’re better off driving down to the river if you’re going to swim or fish. It’s quite the hike back up to the cabin. Loved our stay!

Great Cabin
My wife and I absolutely loved staying here. The property owner was very nice and helpful during our visit and immediately replied to our questions that we had. The cabin and view was exactly as described, and we would love to stay here again.

Great little cabin
The best thing about this cabin is the large porch and beautiful view. The kitchen is well outfitted with good pots, pans, dishes and silverware. Note that there is not a dishwasher.The bedrooms are very small but the beds are comfortable and the small bathrooms are nicely remodeled. There are no bedside tables and lights. The hot tub was fun. It is in a great location to hike at Grayson Highlands. We hope to come back!

42 anniversary
The description fit the property perfectly. Have never stayed north of West Jefferson. We loved the location, easy access. Thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary weekend trip here. We hope to return again in the future and highly recommend Riverwood Retreat.

Amazing Cabin & Best host ever
We stayed in this cabin with my husband, my mom and 2 kids (4 and 10 years old) and everyone had an amazing stay. First of all, the cabin had breath taking views and the sound of the river down the cliff was so relaxing. We stayed during Easter, and the cabin was decorated so nicely- our kids loved it. The cabin was equipped with everything that we needed during our stay ( kitchen stuff, toys, books, cleaning supplies etc.) Although it was raining most of our stay and it was cold outside, we could still enjoy the outdoors since part of the deck was covered and there was a gas fire-pit. Brian- our host - was very responsive. Every time I have sent him a message, he replied back in minutes and was super helpful whenever I needed help. Since only the last day of our stay was sunny, Brian was so nice and allowed us to stay pass the check-out time so we could enjoy the outdoors and the hot tub. He was by far the best host we had for a property we stayed in our trips. I would have given him 10 stars if I could 😊 We absolutely recommend this cabin to everyone who wants to stay in the mountains for a relaxing getaway. We will definitely be back for our next mountain trip !

Secluded Dream Cabin
The owner was always prompt with all communications. Always immediate, clear responses. The cabin had the most marvelous view. Even though it was a cold, winter weekend...we enjoyed the view of New River and soaking in the hot tub and sitting by the firepit. This is my most favorite cabin I have ever stayed in whether in West Virginia, Virginia. North Carolina, Maine, or Georgia. Plus, W. Jefferson was a delight to visit.

Christmas in the Mountains
A cozy cabin with beautiful views. We enjoyed the Christmas decorations and the cleanliness. The cabin had everything we needed. We were there when the storm “Elliott” went through. Winds made it about minus 27 but the owner had plenty of propane for us to stay warm. We also got some snow. The owner checked in on us during the storm and replied back as soon as we lost power. The power stayed on through the majority of the storm and cable stayed on so we could watch for weather updates. The storm didn’t stop us from visiting the cute little town of West Jefferson. Hope to come back during the summer to enjoy the river which is right below the house! Definitely loved the cabin and the views from the hot tub were breathtaking.

Excellent location, beautiful views! The cabin was well stocked, the deck was awesome for sitting and relaxing. Everything was so clean. The neighbors were very friendly. Hot tub was amazing!! Nice shops in nearby West Jefferson. Plenty of state parks nearby for walking and hiking. Lots of local fisherman spots. We enjoyed our vacation immensely.

Nice Spot, hot tub disappointing
Overall, I would stay again. Everything was an easy process, and the place was as expected. The ONLY complaint we had was the hot tub. It was not really that clean, it felt slimy and smelled like mildew. We usually seek out cabins with a nice view and hot tub but this was disappointing as far as hot tub. Views great, house cozy, layout worked well, deck was great, the pics of the house don't give it as much justice in my opinion. The driveway is gravel and steep which wasn't in the description but we had an SUV. We also asked host for an hour later checkout which he allowed and we really appreciated that.

Beautiful, quiet location
We absolutely loved our stay here. The cabin was easy to access with the provided door code, and we arrived to find it spotlessly clean. The kitchen was fully stocked with cooking supplies (utensils, pots & pans, silverware, etc). There were two bedrooms, though we only slept in one. The mattress was a bit firm, but comfortable, and the blankets were nice too. The bedroom had a TV, though we didn't use it. Both bathrooms were clean and functioned well. The best part was the incredible view of the mountains and river. We went at a perfect time to see all the foliage, and spent much of the time during our stay sitting outside, relaxing and listening to the river or the birds. There is a propane fire barrel on the deck that we lit several times, as well as a propane grill we used too. The real (wood) fire pit is back behind the cabin; my only complaint about that was it's very dark to walk back from at night. The hot-tub was clean and running when we arrived, and we enjoyed using it while looking out at the incredible view. This cabin is also dog-friendly, we stayed with our small 20lb dog, who loved the stay and sniffing all the leaves and such. We only reached out to the host once a few weeks before our trip, and he did respond, though it took a little bit. We did not need to reach out to him during the actual stay, because everything we needed was in the guide he sent. All in all a lovely, peaceful stay. My only advice is that the driveway is gravel and very steep, we had trouble getting back up it to leave, so make sure you have good tires!

LOVE this Mountain Getaway
We have enjoyed this cabin annually since 2019. We were very pleased with current upgrades - new shower, wifi. The cabin is clean, comfortable and well stocked. The views from the deck are spectacular and can also be enjoyed around the fire pit or while relaxing in the hot tub. We like to hike! The location is ideal - Not far from Grayson Highlands SP in VA , Blue Ridge pkwy, Stone Mountain, Mt Jefferson, and New River SPs in NC. We look forward to returning!

This house was everything described and more. It was clean, very well stocked and the view was absolutely amazing. We watched the most incredible sunset every evening from the large deck. And the host could not have been more accommodating and helpful. We definitely look forward to staying here again in the future.

4 days......... Awesome.
So private and relaxing. Just me and my sweetheart. Great view, and a nice central location to Damascus, West Jefferson etc. Neighbors were cool. Everything we needed was there.
