Unfortunately we only stayed one night of our four night booking. The location was inconvenient (my fault for booking here) but there were other issues. There’s lots of messages from the host about a “grumpy neighbour” so do NOT park here, don’t walk by his house etc which made the vibe very sketchy especially being in the middle of nowhere. I love living off grid but the setup is a bit poor, once you checkin there’s notes saying don’t use the microwave at night as it can drain the battery (there’s nowhere close by to eat and there’s no other way to cook/heat food), don’t shower late as the pump might annoy the neighbour etc. it was cool seeing the lava flow and I feel for the people in the area that had to rebuild but I would recommend only staying a night, or just drive out here for a couple hours.

This cargo unit on the lava was an amazingly unique place to stay! We were worried about not being able to find the property because of the remoteness, but the owners directions were spot on and we found it without any problems. The bedroom was a little stuffy due to the lack of circulation, but other than that, the unit was very well built and very comfortable and clean. We loved walking on the lava out to the cliff. The owner left great directions and markings on the rocks so we stayed on the allowed path. Very cool experience!

Remote Stargazing
This property was just what we were looking for on our trip. The directions to find the place were clear and it was way easier than we were anticipating from the other reviews. Views are great and the stargazing was fantastic since there’s no light pollution. If you’re looking for a getaway off the beaten path, this is the place for you. We loved our stay here!

Great stay, lovely landscape
The house and landscape were gorgeous. It was a unique feeling stepping on rock that’s only a few years old. Explored the lava plane and it was jaw dropping. However, as we returned, we were shouted at by the “grumpy neighbor”. Maybe we were in the wrong, but we tried staying out of the neighbor’s property. Regardless, would highly recommend, it was the only thing that rubbed us the wrong way

A unique dwelling built on a unique environment, on this planet, or should I say out of this planet! A two-night stay is way too short to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. My heart aches for all the property that was claimed by the volcano, but now, 5 years after you can witness life and creation spawning out of the multiple layers of lava! Definitely revisit and undoubtedly recommend. Alooooooha!

Too off grid for us
Overall the property was as described. It was clean and was off grid however there were some things that did not work well for us. When we arrived at the property there was no wifi. Not usually a big issue however in the unit there is no cell service and we had to leave to get messages through to Ron. At times we could not get them to go through due to the location of this property. It was recommended to keep the unit locked up for safety however when doing so there was no airflow leaving the unit very hot. The inability to keep the unit locked while sleeping and no cell service provided safety concerns for us therefore we did not stay after the first night. If we were not concerned about being able to make or receive calls in case of emergency or keeping the unit locked while we slept it would have worked well for us.

Unique!
A perfect escape from any touristy places…it is an unique experience to walk on the lava AND to sleep in a container! A perfect spot for star-gazing! The place is pleasantly clean and comfortable.

A Unique Getaway
The lava field and ocean views are an unparalleled experience! The location is very remote, and far away from the resorts and crowds. The property manager was very responsive and communicative. Overall a great stay if you are looking for a unique experience!

Power of Lava
It was an awesome, unique experience and I admire everyone who choose to live in this area permanently. The lava all around gives you chills. It's so powerful! The place itself was clean and had everything we needed after a long day of exploring. Sleeping was comfortable even if it was 3 of us in the smaller container . We had no issues finding the place but I would recommend coming in in a day light the first day. If you are trying to walk on the lava towards the ocean, make sure you stay on the "trail". There are little palm trees planted marking the direction and also white sprayed errors on the lava. Otherwise you will be under supervision of one of the neighbors. I guess he is just protecting this special place. I'll definitely come here again.

Übernachten der anderen Art
Die Unterkunft entspricht der Beschreibung und ist für ruhesuchende Abenteurer genau richtig. Es war eine einzigartige Erfahrung auf dem Lavafeld zu übernachten. Leider war der Himmel zu bewölkt, um die Sterne zu sehen. Trotzdem ein toller Aufenthalt. Mahalo

It Did the Job
The reference point for finding the property was terrible. There are two distinct vehicles that the owner could’ve referenced for finding the place, rather than the mile reference. Not everyone can make it out during the day due to work constraints. I also thought we were right by the ocean and would be able to hear the sounds. For the price, it was OK. It served its purpose; we needed a place to sleep and bathe.

Fun Experience on the lava
This is our 2nd time staying at these properties. This time we took the time to walk to the cliffs. The owner has wrote up and sprayed arrows out exactly where to walk to get to them. Saw a beautiful rainbow while walking. Fun experience to stay in the shipping container on the lava!

A great experience
The property itself is accurately described. Bunk beds are doubles so I would sleep two kids on the top level and two avg sized adults on the lower. The couch in the living room is not as comfortable as I expected but my son preferred his own room with a door. The kitchenette has limited supplies, so it’s better to bring food home than try to cook full course meals. But we didn’t go there to cook gourmet dinners. Think one pot meal… We went there for the experience and location. There is no cellphone service in the area and therefore you need to feel comfortable being in the dark in the middle of nowhere, especially at night. There are neighbours but the closest contact we had was the waves they gave as we drive by each other. I recommend a keep for this road. We met a photographer who has a sign out front called Hot Foot Photography and found him to be lovely - we bought some of his work which I would not be able to find anywhere else. Our host was responsive and informative and the info book he provided was helpful. The lava in the daytime glimmers like gems and is stunning! You can walk through the same type of field at the national park. Listen to the locals and the host about going to the edge of the cliff to see the water. It’s a 200+foot drop and the waves crash all the way up making it slippery. Combined with the trade winds that are extremely strong and you have the perfect environment for falling to your death. Apparently 10 feet of the cliff fell into the ocean during the last storm…so be careful and do not go out there at night. Just be smart and watch your kids. We found the night sky to be beautiful everywhere. But where else can you sit outside for hours and not be cold or be disturbed by cars? We saw many falling stars, the Milky Way and enjoyed the sound of the wind… no frogs! Would I do it again? Maybe. Am I glad I did it once? Absolutely!

Directions were easy but in the daylight to first find the property. Very clean and just enough space for my husband and I. It is off the grid so be sure to stop on the way for food or anything you’ll need. There was limited items in kitchen but enough to get us through the weekend!

Experience of a lifetime !
Staying here was an amazing experience that you would not get staying in town. The stars at night are unbelievable! So peaceful and quiet. So thankful that we took time to slow down and relax and enjoy this marvelous place. The walk to the cliffs was longer than it seemed, but so worth it! Beds were super comfy. We had no issues with power. Ron was very responsive with any questions I had. The neighbor got a little grumpy with the other people who were staying in the other unit. They were walking down to the water at 6:15pm and he yelled and swore at them because it was too late and going to get dark. Honestly, he was really just looking out for them, but had a little too much to drink, so he was loud and I seen. We walked it the next morning and he was kind and just warned us it was a long way and we better have good shoes on. There was a very nice woman that I talked to that owns property right here, but only has an outhouse on it. She comes sometimes from the mainland and just sleeps in her van right here. She gave us lots of great tips and a history of the area. The grumpy neighbor came up at night and was very loud and yelling at her about something, but she made sure to walk down with him away from this property so he wouldn’t disturb us. Overall, this was an experience of a life time and I wish I had more time to stay here.

Fantastic breath of fresh air
We loved this place. The owner was quick to respond to any questions. We didn’t have any problems with neighbors. Would recommend taking owners advice and finding it while it’s still light outside. Can’t wait to make it back. The silence and stars at night and light showers in the morning with double rainbows was lovely.

If you are on the Big Island to visit the Volcano National Park, this property is in a good location. The shipping container home is divided into two separate spaces. There were two of us, and we were in the smaller space, which was fine for us. The property is off-grid, so if you want to use a lot of power, then don't stay here. If you want to unplug and sit on the deck, drink wine and look at the amazing star-filled sky, then do stay here. There isn't a lot of counter space and only one hot plate so cooking can be a challenge, but with a little planning, it's not bad. The coolest part for me was being surrounded by igneous rock (dried lava). It's in every direction as far as you can see. I would stay there again if I return to the island.

perfect stay on the lava field
this is a perfect little place for a tranquil stay on the lava field, easy to find with the owner's instructions, has everything you need, enough off-grid power and water supply for the two of us, comfortable beds, all is neat and clean, having no A/C is ok in this breezy location (we had no encounter with the sometimes mentioned grumpy neighbor)

Quiet, Reclusive & Comfortable Container
Ron has done a great job with designing this space. We stayed in the smaller half and had everything we needed for our stay. Ron was easy to get in touch with and responded right away to our questions. The gravel road is great to do your runs or walk/hikes on. It goes all the way to the sea arch if you’re up for a half marathon. No cars allowed though. The night sky is incredible and you can see the Milky Way clearly without a telescope. Hot Foot Photography is a must stop on the gravel road out to the container. Gary is a true “lava” buff and a fount of information on Kīlauea. His photographs are amazing. He welcomes visitors to share his vast knowledge of the volcano and also the area with. Meeting him and talking with him was one of the highlights of our stay in Hawaii.

Grumpy Neighbor Rules Non Disclosed Video Cameras Host Spies on Guests with Cameras Not enough back up battery power for crappy weather days ROACHES Neighbor with Junk - probably where roaches come from Nothing for Kids to do at ALL onsite - Should state this in posting!! Do not take your 80 year old mother here for her birthday either, they cannot walk on lava and so they are stuck at house or driving and driving and driving. Pay more for a place close to a beach so your elderly family members are not stuck!

Fantastic spot .... Amazing views
Check in and property were exactly as described, clean and easy. Easy parking, the last 2ish miles of road are a bit rough. Directions are very straightforward. Views: Nighttime stars...moon over the water... old lava flows in morning... Incredible. The walk out to the water was well marked, bring gloves and good shoes and a camera.

OK place for a different experience.
Good size for Two people. Inexpensive basic stay. Everything was clean. Definitely get the correct directions while you are in a area with cell service and save it. We were already In a spotty signal when we got the final directions. Would have been nice to get something a day in advance. Had to double back . And bring drinking water. Not much of a kitchen set up. Huge sink for some reason and a bunch of utensils. And a microwave. There was an electric hot plate but nowhere to plug it in without moving stuff. Small coffee maker we plugged in infront of the mini fridge on the floor. And a Smokey Joe grill but no charcoal. So it's a good place for a stop over while doing things in the area not much to do there. Bed, shower, and stars.

Different experience
It is very different experience and place is awesome - build on top of lava. If you want to experience something out of ordinary, that place for you to try. Would suggest checking in during day time. At night it is complicated and harder to find that property.

Beautiful and unique
The container was amazing and well equipped. Bathroom was nice as well as very clean. Kitchen surprisingly, though small, had everything it needed and was stocked with the basics. Bedroom was comfortable and clean. Lovely front porch. We watched the sunrise over the lava field front the front porch which was beautiful. Two small suggestions… there is no guard/rail for the top bunk which is high, so only one person could sleep in the top bunk-(an easy fix. ) Another suggestion, there is no surface to eat on really. The is a small , lovely coffee table, but hard for 2 people, let alone 4 people to eat at… As advertised, it was hard to find in the dark… but a kind neighbour helped us. Bring everything you need to eat, it is remote. (Which was no problem if prepared).

Amazing
Die Unterkunft auf dem erloschenen Lavafeld ist unglaublich und wirklich was Besonderes. Man sollte natürlich bedenken, dass sowohl Wasser (Regenwasser) und Strom (Solar) nicht unbegrenzt vorhanden ist. Der gruselige Nachbar ist uns nicht begegnet. Wir können die Unterkunft von Ron unbedingt empfehlen!

Overall, we had a stay as expected. The property description is accurate and the other reviews also give an accurate depiction. This space is in a remote area and totally off grid. The space, the hike to the cliff, and stargazing were great overall. Some things to note: The place is a little difficult to find. There is not an address that you can put into maps. The host does provide directions however they could be clearer and more detailed. Go off of his written directions and not the address provided. We thought we could put in the address provided and go from there but don’t do this- just follow the written directions. I would recommend taking a screenshot of the host’s instructions before driving to the place because more than likely you will not have signal. We had to drive about 20 minutes for signal but the WiFi worked in the house. I would also recommend reading other reviews to help with navigating the area beforehand. Pay attention to power usage. We didn’t have any neighbors using the unit next to us and we didn’t use much power ourselves so that we could use the fan all night. Please be aware you are probably going to be hot but that comes with being in this climate in general. There is no AC but opening the windows and doors helped bring in airflow. At night, though, we did not feel comfortable with leaving the window and doors open so I would recommend that a bigger fan (maybe a ceiling fan) be provided in the bunk bed room because during our stay there was only a small personal fan we could use to provide any airflow for the whole room for 3 people. Also be sure to store your food securely or in the fridge. One of a kind stay!

We absolutely LOVED this place! The location was incredible, the cliffs a short walk from the property were beautiful. Beds were very comfortable and we had no issues at all with electricity e.t.c. Only feedback is that the kitchen could use an extra pan or two and is quite small given that it is a shipping container.

Incredible views on the lava field
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Communication with the host was fantastic and he even offered us some additional recommendations for sight seeing and dining. Power did go out a couple times in the mornings but there was a large group staying in the other container. Nothing we couldn’t wait out. :) This location is an absolute dream and I would not hesitate to recommend or rebook! We had 4 adults and thought the bunk beds were some of the more comfortable beds we had slept on between the 3 islands we visited. If you are arriving in the dark, look for the pike of junk cars as your driveway marker. Don’t let it dissuade your, consider it Island art. 😂 We would have loved to have the entire location to ourselves as having neighbors in a small location and walking out to watch the sunrise, but finding multiple people sleeping in the back of trucks/jeeps in the driveway was a surprise- but truly this was our only gripe. It doesn’t normally sleep 14 so I think this was a one off situation. The next group was a quiet family of 3 and much more respectful. Bottom line if you are looking for a unique vibe and sleeping in a remote location with little amenities is ono with you, book this stay. You will not be disappointed! ❤️

Great quiet place on the lava beds
My friend and I had a great time in the area. It was quiet and we didn’t have neighbors in the joining space. We love the Pāhoa area and it’s just about a 15-20 minute drive and also close to the black sands beach. The place was very clean and well equipped, small kitchen but we were able to make breakfast and dinner. Highly recommend making sure you find the property your first day during the daylight, can be a little tricky, but very easy to find once you do. Loved looking at the stars at night!

Getaway
If you are looking for a getaway this is it. The star gazing from the porch is second only to Mauna Kea. It’s peaceful and quiet. It’s a drive to anything but if you’re looking for time away from the chaos this is it. This was my second time staying and I will be back again.

Nice rustic experience
I chose this location since we were visiting to experience the volcano. Being an off-grid place, located on a lava field, it was a nice change. Few neighbors, most pretty rustic-looking. It was quiet, and the night sky was spectacular. We were there just long enough to sleep two nights, arriving late and leaving early both mornings. Cozy, comfortable, secure for our needs.

This property is very clean, neat and exactly as advertised. It is very remote but the electricity, wifi and water supply worked perfectly. The only down side is that some of neighboring homes/shacks are in rough shape - not a problem if you are staying in but not ideal for exploring the area on foot.

Beautiful container home <3
We stayed here for 5 nights, it is a really nice place to stay :) you can hear the frogs and jungle noises but its far away so when you are inside it is quiet. It was a little hard to find, there is a slight hill with a delineator post by it and you turn right after, the first few times we went there we drove right past the road. It is an off grid home and there was a small issue where the outlet for the water pump kept switching off, the owners were very responsive to our messages and it was fixed as soon as they figured out what the problem was :)
